Hi Fellow Folders
I thought I would help you guys a little in your efforts to help Folding@Home achieve it's goals.
I had embraced the idea before I joined Team EVGA. I started off with a Asus Z270 A (currently waiting for corrective Bios Surgery/Recovery due largely to a Windows 10 update!).
It was my first folding computer and it was my first real upgrade in a desktop computer since an Asus P5B
P5B.PNG

Z270.PNG

I showed you these two images to help you realize what an upgrade it was. 2006 till 2017 I had not upgraded my desktop.
(Anyone interested in paying $100 off current list price if I can save it?....KIDDING!)

It wasn't long before I realized GPU's provided more bang for the electrical buck than CPU's and before I knew it I had gotten to the point I had to shelve 2060 and 3080 GPU's due to better efficiency with Higher output GPU's...
Sold any Asus GPU's because they had to be RMA'd for fan issues. Sold My EVGA 2060's because they only did 2mppd.
EVGA extended all 3080 warranties (long past when I was allowed to!) and recently they sent me a complete set of fans (3 new fans) when a 3080 FTW3 had 2 fans giving me trouble.
IMHO.... EVGA has been an outstanding corporation leading the industry in how they did everything!
It is such a shame they felt they needed to tear the band-aid off when it came to deal with the forum....hard to comprehend...I don't owe them anything more than the respect I received.
This is a very short introduction to me...SmookinJoe...probably the one and only....How else was I to become unique when I too am a Smokin Joe in some circles.
I have started off this way to become familiar with you guys and let you know I am not an expert.
I know nothing!
I am Canadian Eh! as opposed to American unh?...That's gonna set some people off...
Hey I didn't vote Trudeau's son in as Prime Minister and I sure as heck didn't vote in Trump....o_O...:D
Last great leader we had was Jean Chretien and he was Pierre Elliot Trudeau's bag man!
(If you didn't know Chretien and Clinton were great best friends and probably still are.)
Anyway...
The reason I am posting to let you know I have started folding for Techpowerup. I can only imagine the feelings I am stirring up just by starting to climb your leaderboard.
I don't want any of you to feel challenged by my being here. I am here to help Folding@home. On my NoN-AMD folding farm I have reliable equipment that run 24-7.
I don't know how long I will continue to do this and I don't know if I will buy a 5090.

Mind if I play through?

:)

Seems to be located in the Spectator section....Peanut gallery maybe?

Nice Avatar but, Are you even allowed to voice your opinion if you aren't a participant?
Think about it...
Either you do or you don't want to help?
I remember the wife was screaming at me "Your gonna get sprayed... Your gonna get sprayed"
as I was in the middle of rescuing a skunk wrapped up in a kids hockey net.
All I could say was, in a very gentle voice.
"Yer not helpin"
Why is that FreedomEclipse?
Why can't I find you on the Folding at home Stats page?

Hi Toothless
Just sayin Hi
I am waiting for my crunchers to finish up before I can try and change over to the TPU team.
All the CPU's crunch but the GPU's focus on Folding at home.

I too had a old machine till I upgraded, I ran a 1100T with a 7970Ghz with custom BIOS both under water in a machine that was almost 13 years old.

We can't be too far from each other, but I'm sure you get the coastal warm winds that bring precipitation and not the frigid Saskatoon winds. Glad to have you here, there is always room for a lost soul, we might not see eye to eye on some things but there is room around the campfire for all. Once upon a time I was a king of folding, back when I managed networks and single core CPU cycles were all we had. Now I'm reduced to my gaming machine helping heat a too large house and a dip in progress the few times I get to play games or do actual work on a overpriced space heater.

Yeah Steevo
I started in computers quite late.
After 1986 just after I bought my first house.
When I left New Brunswick for the last time, my goal was to try and buy my own home.
I had had a few adventures before I left for Calgary( to find myself and never look back)....
Toronto(half the family moved there but Ontario is not the center of the universe and is too full of it's self),
Montreal(for to visit a friend who had burned his bridge in New Brunswick..lol )
Too many great adventures and near misses to tell them all here..Now where was I?..

oh yeah....;)

Someone gave me a bunch of pirated games and an Atari..I think a Commadore 64..suddenly can't recall..I passed it on a few years later and got..a new..AMD 386.
Installed Dos 5 and discovered lots of great software to make it work way better than stock..Qemm, Stacker, etc..at least until the Borg(Microsoft) assimilated them.
Win 3.1, Wing Commander 1 & 2...Then Doom and Duke Nukem..Destroyed too many mice and mouse pads..L0L
Got into Chuck Yeager's Flight Sim
Then I just had to stop and focus on the real world..
Don't game anymore.
As I move into my Final chapter...I call it... My End of Life
I embrace things and try to find the good in them...keeping policies in place to justify painting outside the lines and keep others safe.
I drive tractor trailer for a living and will till the day I die..
(Self taught in a weekend in Calgary after getting a pep talk by my dispatcher sitting around a coffee table full of keys for every truck in the fleet at Hills Security Moving in Calgary while getting wasted)
I had a Z28 back when I was a kid in the early 70's and had a huge following...Mostly Police...
Recently I bought an end of life toy and it is a MONSTER that I try to tame
2009 X5 35d...E70
Try not to read too much into it...
I am only as good as others allow me to be..
I have cut people off...just in time for them to wave thanks..not the finger but a genuine rolled down window thumbs up.o_O
I influence others in being better drivers by Leading by example and following by choice..
New Brunswick is a great place to be from...
I am living in what I feel is the best part of Canada (weather wise)
Lower mainland BC...I just discovered rust on my 2003 Dodge Cummins powered 1 ton..I bought it new for my 50th...
Now you know how old I am...;)
Thanks for saying Hi
Joe

PS...This doesn't come close to my life's story...but I have had the "Best day of my Life" more on that later;)

The next story is the only copy I could find...

I have told it much better, starting from the middle of the flight...lol

There were a couple of things we had said yes to on the mid flight declaration.

We had brought dulse (food) with us.

Please Enjoy and laugh with me because it was very scary..

I would like to tell you about a trip I had taken to Australia back in 1999 and being quite concerned about
a document that the stewardess had given me. It asked me if I had ever been convicted of a crime. o_O

I was scared and concerned because I hadn't expected it. I was so worried I was going to ruin our vacation.

The wife and I were escorted, past 1000's and 1000's of people, lined up, going through customs, having their luggage inspected.

The airport at Sydney is massive.

We walked past many garbage containers overflowing with rotting fruit....

These inspectors were aggressive...

Some of their luggage was being ransacked...literary being torn apart.

It was scary..for us..we didn't know what we were in for.

We were escorted to a small door away from all the others, into a private area.

It had a couple of conveyor belts and about 6 people were staring at us...We were the only ones on the 747 being given "special" treatment.

This was intense...intensely scary...when they started to ask us questions and inspect us.

We were very quiet and slow to respond....

They gently squeezed and smelt the dulse. I offered them some and even ate some it front of them.

I think they laughed when someone mentioned vegemite....lol

They turned out to be the nicest people genuinely interested in our plans for Australia.

In a matter of minutes we were done and welcomed to Australia.

We stepped out into the main terminal in a matter of minutes ahead of everyone else.

Our jaws dropped, we were first in line on the buses. Had the best seats for the trip to our hotel...it was great! :D

So I tell all my friends if you are traveling to Australia to say yes when it comes time to answer that question...

"Have you ever been convicted of a crime?"

In Australia it seems to be a speed gate, after all they used to be a penal colony.

Hope you enjoyed my story.
;)

SmookinJoe is an absolute legend in the folding world, and a champion of the EVGA folding team. It takes a LOT to get a Canadian riled up, particularly SmookinJoe, but here we are.

TechPowerUp, consider yourselves fortunate to have such a dedicated folder on your team.

Cheers to you SmookinJoe!

All the best,
Nereus from EVGA forums.

Nereus

You are too kind bro
I have always looked up to you and what YOU personally have done for others..;)
Thank You for your support
I will do my best to live up to it.
Joe

I am going to miss the EVGA forums. Loved their GPUs, some of their motherboards and PSUs. Customer service was very good, in the USA anyway.
I will be keeping my X299 micro, x99 Classifieds, 3080FTW and 3080Ti GPUs
Oh yeah, hello!

NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT....

So Celia and I were sitting there, staring through a windshield, at 1000+ stairs to a lookout, in the middle of nowhere. It was a beautiful sunny morning and we were less than enthused at the moment. We had just scaled down from a sleep six motor home to a raised roof 4x4 Toyota that apparently sleeps 3 1/2 people. Let's say we were moody and not getting along at the moment...lol

I cued Jagged Little Pill in the tape player and the wife says..."I don't want to listen to that" and quickly I shoot back..."FINE" ..ejecting the tape at the same time..

I tune in the radio. This is the first time we actually used the radio on our entire trip across Australia ..."50 Dolphins are stranded in Napean Bay" were the first words we heard..."on Kangeroo Island"'??? We quickly checked the map and Napean Bay was just a short ways away, behind us...we threw the Toyota into gear and blasted off..looking at one another and saying..."That is why we are here"
To be continued....

Now this happened in 1999 during our trip across Australia.

Some details I will have trouble remembering but the emotions are strong and real.
When we arrived at Napean Bay, we parked high above the beach. As we tried to gain access we were challenged and asked why we were there. "To help" was our response. We were directed to the next section down the hill. I sent Celia back to the vehicle to stow the camera because it wouldn't be of any use for the rescue. This is where we got separated.

I went with a group to the beach and before we got there we were taught what to do and what not to do when it came to dealing with the creatures.

Talk quietly, approach from the side (so they can see you), don't get any water in their blow hole. Move slowly ....etc

There was at least one helicopter on the hill maybe two. There were some military style transport, near the helicopter.
On the beach was a couple of Zodiacs with outboard motors... Tents, Awnings...and a group of people way off in the water, doing something.
A backhoe was doing something on the beach.
There was a long trench from the water that lead up to the group of Dolphins but it was about 100 yds short of the tents. Dolphins in all shapes and sizes were, helter skelter, around a very dark dolphin.
All of the dolphins had burlap blankets covering everything but their heads and tails, they also had little flags on a wire stuck in the ground beside them.
The dark dolphin had no covering. That dolphin was the pregnant female that had led the rest of the pod to beach themselves.
It was dead.
People were gathered around a couple of guys standing in mud up to their waist and they were passing 20 liter pails of mud up to the people to carry to the dolphins. As I approached this mayhem I could hear various conversations.
Some were offering refreshments from the tents, some were warning about not letting the backhoe get near a particularly large dolphin that was shaking violently when it approached...and some were very grave and talking about dissections, autopsy's, labs and that the flags indicated which ones weren't going to be released because they were too weak and wouldn't survive.....

Some very small children were talking to the dolphins, one child or maybe two children using little plastic toy buckets and toy shovels placing the dirty mud onto dolphins to keep them hydrated.

Everything was covered in mud, blood, and dirt. Clothing, buckets, shoes, dolphins, people

They bleed just like us..

The blood was dark streams of elongated, congealing...tentacles...I kept hearing the voices of death and dis-pare and thinking what can I do to help...

What can I do??

My hearing started to ring louder and louder...the hissing reached a point where I couldn't hear the voices any more and it was hissing louder and LOUDER...I knew I was going into shock and as I spun around looking for what to do, how to help.... the beach and everything around me started to spin and I desperately needed to find a direction something to focus on and give me hope.

Suddenly I saw a young man, he was wearing a black divers skin suit and carrying two full pails of fresh water. He looked parched like he was in desperate need and would drop at any minute and it was at that point I found someone to help.

Something to do!

I grabbed two mt pails and went to the trench, got fresh water and quickly rushed back. I was cautious in the beginning having remembered the instructions but as time went on I slowly did it faster and faster. I would quickly approach from the side, announce "I'm Back" set down a fresh bucket for the children and helpers to keep pouring fresh cups of water on the dolphin and the other bucket I would drench the dolphin cleansing and refreshing every time I hit them with the bucket of fresh cold clean water.

They loved it.

No one said to stop or slow down. I was careful of the blowhole...they were happy and would flap their tails in the sand every time I did it. Like they were trying to swim...Very quickly the blood was gone, the mud was gone....the voices of doom and gloom disappeared..I looked around for the guy I had started helping he too had disappeared..

We were quickly running out of dolphins to attend too. The backhoe had been transporting them one at a time and the last guy. The big guy who wasn't going to survive had been upgraded...Everyone had been upgraded.

They needed volunteers to carry the heavy guy and ...wanting to be where the action is ... I grabbed an edge. We were carrying it on a large burlap sheet with a rope, sewn into the edge surrounding it and this is what we used to carry this 1200lb creature. 20 or 30 steps and then set it down stretch regrab... ok lets go again.

When we reached the water they said someone needed to stay with the dolphin and keep it upright..."I'll Do it" was my response.

As I am standing there in 3 ft of water a little 3 ft long dolphin swims by and a little girl is following closely prancing and singing and waving her hands in the water, skimming along the surface. That's her dolphin and she is lookin after it...lol

Well my guy decides he wants to swim and I am holding onto him because I know it is too shallow. Someone says, "If he wants to swim let em swim"...so I let him go and immediately it rolls on its side and swims in a big counter-clockwise circle. I am high stepping through the water trying to catch up and luckily he comes to a stop nose first driven into a large group of very quiet dolphins.

Soon as I get a hold of him I spin him upright and a large flute of water comes out the blow hole...Someone says "Can you kindly control your animal" and we all laugh...
Everyone is talking and laughing and it is one of the greatest moments you can ever imagine.

We have just saved them, only one was lost.

So we are all standing around having a great time and it is decided that we aren't going to wait for high tide at 5pm, it is 2ish and where we are the water is deep enough.

So we let them go and the large pod of compacted dolphins is moving toward the bay, to the east, and not towards open water. We keep pushing them and they are still moving in the wrong direction. Now I am starting to get up to my neck in water. the beach is very gradual and I am getting concerned about drowning and causing a distraction.

I can't swim...

Now at this point I shout .."Why don't you use the Zodiacs to herd them?".. you could see the light bulbs going off in all the educated people's brains...

I guess they hadn't seen Flipper before.

Well, at this point, they load some kids, boys, girls, young adults into the Zodiacs and away they went.

It was beautiful.

And when we walked ashore we all walked together in a long line abreast to one another....It was like the end of a movie.

I think we were singing too.

Best day of my life.
