Hi all ,

I was just seeking for advice on what to do next on my monitor purchase.

Currently I use since 2018 a Msi Optix magcqr 32 1440p 144hz , is a VA panel without any of the newest features like HDR,etc (https://www.msi.com/Monitor/Optix-MAG321CQR/Specification). Now that I'm upgrading my gpu to a rtx 4070 ti super and one of my favorites games is about to be released (Stalker 2) I was thinking to take the opportunity and upgrade my monitor as well since I hear that IPS panels are way better for single player games like I usually play (The witcher 3, god of war , re4,etc).

Now this is where I have my doubts. There is a lot of difference in terms of image quality ,2k speaking, between my current monitor and a similar one with IPS panel and features like HDR, etc for single player games?

Talking about 4k , I read and see many videos where the 4070 ti super should be more than enough to run at max settings with DLSS enabled at 50-60 fps but makes me wonder which option is the best in terms of image quality , if staying at 2k with more fps or go up to 4k at probably 50-60fps.

I know this is a discussed topic already but coming from a VA panel and having a gpu which is not the ideal for 4k gives me a lot of thoughts.

My Pc specs :

Cpu: Ryzen 7 7800x3d

Mobo: Asus rog b650e-f

Ram: Kingston beast 6000mhz cl36 32gb

Gpu: Gigabyte eagle 4070

Thank you very much for any advice given ,

Regards

As panel goes sure ips is better but the bigger picture here since the games you mention are triple A titles, the 4070 ti super will struggle in the near future...
look at black myth wukong... 44fps at 4k... you'd better wait for 50 series and make your panel buying decision then

if you dont mind dropping quality setting then 4070ti super is okay but i'd get a more powerful gpu for 4k
also what are the rest of pc specs maybe some other members can shed some light

Hi , thank you for your reply! I have added the specs to the post. I do not think waiting for 50 series is an option because prices will be lot higher , Im getting the 4070 super ti for just 110 usd more adding my 4070 . Also staying at 2k is an option as well

if its $110 more to upgrade to a 4070ti super... then i suppose its okay to upgrade...

I hate to say this but I heard this same story for decades. "Wait for the next card so you can play at 4K" (at that time it was from 1024x768 to 1080p). Problem is, by time the 5k series comes out, there will be titles that will be single or lower double digit fps for 4K on the top of the line card.

It's one of those things you will be waiting and chasing for forever.

Just do your research VA vs IPS it kinda just depends and how high end the VA is.

Both have their Pros/Cons

I personally hate the black levels of ips monitors but that probably becuase I am pretty use to oled at this point. Some of the fald ips monitors can be ok but they need way more zones than a VA based panel to give good HDR

If a panel doesn't have a ton of zones it isn't really hdr and I wouldn't bother buying one it's just fake hdr otherwise that destroys image quality.

As far as 4k goes if you're ok using Performance mode in DLSS it performs similarly to 1440p DLSS quality but looks similar to slightly better depending on game.

So to me it's just a trade off but 4k looks much better than 1440p to my eyes but just expect to have to upgrade gpus more frequently.

For me 1440p UW is a decent enough middle ground not as boring as standard 1440p and not as taxing as 4k.

I didn't consider 1440p for even a picosecond, went straight from 1080p VA to 4K IPS.

I need to inform me better about those high end VA panel you mentioned , one thing that I was thinking about is that I usually play on a bright room making the IPS the better option I think but I been using a VA panel since 2018 , so , I will not discard a VA panel just for that.

I guess that is a nice upgrade , I went from 1080p to 1440p and it remains to be seen what happens next...

I had a 32" 4K60 first, then I got a cheap used 27" 4K120, the slower/larger one is my media screen now :)

You may as well go for 4K unless you want super high refresh rates.
1440p is becoming the new 1080p, I've been on that res for 7+ years already (it's time).

You'll need to upgrade you're GPU more often (or go big), but that comes with the territory.
As for which monitor, RTings is your friend, scrutinize everything you're considering on their site.

If you're on the fence and you like to just set graphics to the highest, don't go 4K. The only reason I'm on 4K was that the monitor was way cheaper than similar 1440p monitors at the time of purchase. Games are much harder to run, and I use resolution scaling in Windows anyway, and add to this some software and even some Windows elements will look blurry and some stuff just doesn't play nice at all with it. 1440p would have been perfect.

VA is better than IPS.
But OLED is still better.

4K is the way to go. You can adjust the in-game settings, accordingly, as per your FPS range wishes...

Hell I ran 4K60 on a GTX1080

I would suggest OLED as well if funds allow it.

You should be fine at 4K on the games you listed with a 4070 Ti Super. STALKER 2 may require more than the requirements put out a couple of years ago but you can always turn off ray tracing and use DLSS 3 if supported or possibly get a mod to enable it. Some games like Cyberpunk 2077 will require turning down some settings but as long as you have reasonable expectations for the 4070 Ti Super then you will enjoy it.

I just had my first taste of 4K gaming a few minutes ago after 8 years on 1440p and it is a big difference in quality and sharpness. I'm impressed and definitely a fan of 4K now. My monitor and 4070 Super are on loan for now. I'm waiting until the end of the year to do a completely new build and buy an OLED 4K and possibly a 5090 when they come out if it's not ridiculously priced but that's not a requirement to enjoy 4K. I just want one.

Im not looking to change my gpu every 2 years for example , thats what is holding me back at the moment to go 4k.

Thanks for sharing your experience! As much as I would like to get an oled monitor , I don’t think I will get one since here at my country they cost around 1500 usd the cheapest one.

Probably yes , stalker 2 will require more specs from what was posted years ago since is a UE5 game, thats why keeping me in 2k will probably the best option to run that game and others on a decent quality with a decent framerate

I'd wait till today's high end 1440p gaming
monitors with real hdr are in your price range either one of the oled varients or 1000+ zone mini led versions.

Something with this panel

Ips is fine as well at 500+ dimming zones at a min but preferably 1000+ as well contrast will still be way worse than a VA but ips does have some other strengths so it's a trade off.

This list might help but look at reputable reviews from Rtings, monitors unboxed, TFT.
