I wonder if the so called professional players would even notice if you gave them a fast IPS monitor with TN sticker on it.

Probably not :)
But from my experience I see that more people notice the difference between TN and VA/IPS panels than between 144Hz and 165Hz.

Claiming to see difference between 144 and 165 is flat out lying into your pocket :D
You see difference on input lag in that cases not on refresh.... a very good 144hz will outperform a bad 165hz......

BTW my dad, have an old sony CRT 75 or 90hz dont remember and can tell difference from my 120hz benq lcd.....input lag is the key, refresh rate is part of input lag, but when gaming you need to watch input lag as first data
