Mussels needs help!

Ok guys so i've got a real PITA PC from work with odd symptoms.

Its freezing and turning the monitor off (amber light) when left alone for 8+ hours.

*It passes OCCT linpack.
*PSU is brand new (old one had same problem, not the cause it seems)
*Fresh formatted OS in case it was a software problem.
*HDD seems to be fine
*No BSOD's or entries in the event log
*No overheating - everythings actively cooled and its winter here. max temp was 55C during linpack.

ideas/thoughts? currently testing a spare PCI-E graphics card to see if the intel onboard was failing. not sure what else i should be looking at.

Almost just seems to be a stability problem. First thing I'd try would be to give the CPU and RAM one more notch of juice to see if it helps.

rams been downclocked from 667 to 533, no voltage controls on the board. its only failing at idle which its whats throwing me off.

no error messages at all. its like the monitor goes off and the system just hard freezes.

just checked and EIST is disabled, so its not like its erroring at low speeds/volts either.

Sleep states off in bios?

Perhaps try setting your HDD to not sleep and "allow sleep/hibernation" off in Windows power modes.

everything was set to stay on 24/7 since this machine controlled an antique LPT printer.

i've just updated the BIOS to see if that helps, and put in a PCI-E GF 6200. unless i get some mindshattering suggestions, i'll just leave it be for another 24 hours to see what happens.

My computer started doing this every now and then since upgrading my video card. It hard crashes every now and then if left alone for an hour.

I want to follow your progress to see if I can get any troubleshooting ideas.

I was thinking the same as erocker with the sleep states, Maybe try reinstalling the motherboard drivers and such. And check under Device Manager to check sleep states.

I take it no screen saver trys to activate ?, if so disable it

fresh format, all power saving features disabled.

first OS was XP SP1, current is SP3 with all updates.

havent disabled power saving stuff in device manager, but CPU EIST is off in BIOS.

Maybe SP3 is the problem ?. So maybe get aa spare HDD install XP up to SP2 and see if it still does it and see what happens from there.

it was happening on the original OS as well. it really shouldnt be software, as its done it on two OS's now. one outdated, one up to date.

Exactly the same happened to me about a year ago on an 4 year old Dell Optiflex PC.
It froze when not been used/left alone for more than 36 hours.
It controlled a series of weights, via RS484 serial ports.

I went through almost the same troubleshooting as all mentioned here.

It turned out, after 2 weeks of troubleshooting that there was a fault on the motherboard, that caused the IDE/SATA controller to stop responding - and thereby the hole system froze.

The PC was replaced and has been running ever since.....

My PC was not exactly doing this.. but when left idle it used to restart or shut down...
I tried changing RAM slots(It worked for a while).
Then I removed the CMOS battery, rubbed it gently with a soft cloth and put it back. My problem solved...

It may/may not work for you... Just give it a try..

its certainly possible for something to be up with the CMOS battery. i'll swap it with a spare.

but a year later my mobo is gone... could also be faulty MB..
I have now found out when MB is about to go it starts giving prior indications(irregular boots, sometimes beeps during boots, no supply to monitor & then one fine day it finally dies)..
Hope its not the case here..

thats whats confusing me about the system. when its in use it has NEVER crashed. passes every load test, never hiccups when people are directly using it. it only plays up at night when its cold (winter here), and when its not in use.

hell i could almost leave WCG running on it to keep it warm :/

You are maybe into something there....

Cold = solder shrinks
Warm = solder expands

= cold junction

My computer was doing the same thing you are stating Mussels I had a AMD ATI Radeon 4850. I replaced the card and no issues for a while. My motherboard died soon after though. I also had to replace my memory it was bad as well. I would say its the motherboard if your memory and graphics card are fine.

I had the same problem in this rig . What I found was, with out any load and the OS in idle/logged off state, and have the ssd do it's garbage collection would shut down over night. :wtf:

Turned out to be the lan driver. The latest one from Intel that gave the instability problem.

But your case Id look at the cpu, it isn't getting enough voltage imo

Is the system set to never shut off the monitor yet it goes blank anyway? Had a system do that and of course it had a Coolmax POS power supply in it. I'd be inclined to say motherboard since you changed the PSU, unless the system somehow BSODs and tries to restart but blanks out.

its a 1.6GHz core 2 duo on a crappy MSI board with no voltage control. voltages on the new PSU are fine.

maybe it really is a damaged board/bad solder issue somewhere.

I had a cheapo MSI skt 939 board that became unstable at stock with an Athlon X2 (failed Linpack tests). Maybe the board has simply degraded after years of use and needs to be replaced.

VRMs failing or CPU is failing.
