NO! you don't have usb transfer functionality on that NAS drive, you can only use for two things...

1) Extend your storage to thumb drive or another usb hard drive

2) use as a usb print server.

I don't think there is a viable way to partition then... I mean maybe through network, but as I said it would be fail (worse that epic fail). I tried before and no dice.

The folder method is actually the ideal way to take care of NAS storage. The software in the drive will allocate a portion of space for each user that is made into a folder. And when the user views the NAS storage, he or she will only see his/her own folder and no one else (unless administrator, or if folder is made public). The software on the computer will map the folder on the NAS to a drive letter.

Also, i read the manual, you can use the usb port only to extend the storage, and there is no limits (good thing). Maxtors NAS has limits, but you can at least have a print server.

mmmkay... but there is not way to PHYSICALLY partition the HD like the classic partitioning... just "software walls."?

Don't feel shocked or something, this is nothing new. All NAS, and DIY home servers have this and only this option. All you do is set up the server to the network, create folders, go to the client machine, and map a drive letter to each folder. it can only be a folder, even if you want to map the whole drive, you still have to make a folder. The only network solution that I have experienced so far with out this issue is NDAS, for it mounts the hard drive as a whole, rather than the folder.

I am quite shocked that there is no way to partition the drive... other than the way that you guys have here... mmm... I have done your way but I feel it is not as good as the physical way to do it... I am more shocked there is not USB port to plug directly into the computer.

I am telling you, Ximeta's NDAS enclosures are the way to go. You can even do network raid with two or more enclosures. And they are cheap, about $30-40 (they are sometimes brand under the name Klegg; got mine from Fry's for $25, mostly because I work there part time).
