It can, but there is something called proprietary hardware that screws with the system. In other words, you can try, succeed, but sometimes Dell won't let it happen.

There are a couple of things to consider ...

1) The new processor must fit in the socket. Make sure that the new processor is the same socket type as the old one. (ie 775, etc.)

2) Dell computers are notorious for designing their cooling systems to support only the maximum stuff they recommend. This does not mean that you cannot use a hotter processor, only that you will want to make sure that the case has ample air flow and that the processors HSF is sufficient to cool the new processor.

3) He may want to call Dell to make sure that there is BIOS support for the new processor. I would not upgrade without knowing this.

4) Search the 'net. You will ge more information on what people have tried and succeeded/failed with that you will ever get from Dell.

5) If all else fails, use the TPU motto ... "No guts, no glory" :D

According to the specs it has a socket 775 motherboard with the nForce4 chipset. That means you should be able to put at least a Pentium D in it, probably even a Core 2 Duo, but that might need a BIOS update.
