My RX6700XT is faulty? (DirectX error)

Hello, I have a RX 6700XT (reference model) that have always worked flawlessly but has been lately crashing while gaming.

It always gives me DirectX errors, on both EAFC24 and Call of Duty MW3 / Warzone 3. Timing of these crashes are quite random. It can happen after like 5 or 30 minutes, or even more.

I've tried the card on my 2nd gaming PC and sadly it does the same. Already DDUed and installed the more stable 23.11.1 drivers, I find a little bit better but I'm not even sure about that. My other RX 6600XT works fine on both machines.

Is there anything I can do to test it and know if it's faulty?
And if that is the case, is it even fixable? I can eventually test with a multi meter and replace chips or SMD components if necessary. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like its on its way out, not sure you will be able to test with a multi meter given how you say it will last 5 sometime 30 or more before crashing sounds like intermittent so multimeter probe might not show a problem. Might try using a memory tester for gpu's to see if got a bad ram chip.

Yes it crashes randomly, and never happens while browsing or watching videos.

Try downclocking both GPU and MEMORY, might be degraded. What is your HOT SPOT temp during demanding games?

My old Radeon 6800 hit like 105-110C hot spot in some games. Did not crash tho but it's pretty hot. AMD has like 110C hot spot limit.

My 4070 Ti with OC never exceeds 85C hotspot for comparison. I have experienced many AMD cards with high hot spot temps but crashing should not happen for sure unless there's underlying problems. I am not sure why AMD generally have much higher hot spot temps than Nvidia.

Also try and blow dust out of fins and fans.

I've tried with https://github.com/GpuZelenograd/ and it's indeed giving me errors. As for the temperature, I'm not sure but I think around 85c. I do not remember any problem on temps but I'll check better.

Because your computer has been crashing i would do "on-line windows file checker" by doing DSIM command. ..Instructions here Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files - Microsoft Support

Windows doesn't crash, the games just freeze and after a couple seconds it gives me a directX error. I've also tried reinstalling Windows multiple times but that isn't the problem unfortunately.

Still does not hurt to do a validation check.

Sounds like it's time for a re paste. The Thermal paste may have dried up. It could also be a memory module overheating. If it only happens when Gaming it means it only happens when you are feeding the GPU juice. Try to do a stress Test in AMD software and see where the temps go.

Is there any way to see if I have abnormal temps on the memory modules? On "memtest_vulkan" I get the errors almost instantly.

Before doing anything (If you have the skills) I would the card apart and inspect the Thermal paste and pads.

Repasting wont fix anything, the card is nearing it's end based on memtest_vulcan results. As already mentioned in this thread, try to downclock both VRAM and GPU and see if it stabilizes things.

Interesting, the memtest just passed after I've downclocked just the GPU by 10% using the AMD software (now it operates roughly @2300Mhz).

Leave it running for 1 or 2 hrs if you have the time. Monitor temps during the test. If it passes, games should work as well.

I've repeated the test with a 5% downclock, and I got only 1 error. And yes now I'll leave it with a 10% downclock and let it test for 1 or 2 hours. This way temps are aroung 82c for GPU and 92c for Hotspot GPU.

It's fine up to 105C.
110C is the downclock limit.

Test passed with no errors on 10% GPU downclock. I left memory clock on original values.

So the GPU cannot work full speed.. I guess this is not a memory problem but rather power/temperature related?

Voltage related, the card cannot maintain stock clocks with stock voltage anymore. The GPU chip degraded/is semi-faulty and needs to be downclocked for given stock voltage to be stable.

This could still be related to Thermal Paste or Thermal Pads. I have had this type of behaviour before. Gigabyte cards are notorious for this. I first experienced it with the Vega 64. The next Gigabyte card I bought was the 6500XT and it had the exact same issue, Not enough TP on the chip.

I'll change the thermal pads and thermal paste anyway but I didn't see any particularly high temperature on the sensors.

Sorry for the little rant, but honestly it's a joke that a mid/high end card fails after only 3 years, especially considering I never overclocked it or used for long sessions. But it is what it is I guess.

Any little chance the main GPU chip is still good but is some bad mosfet/SMD component instead?
