Hello Techpowerup Community!

I am new here and I pose a challenging to anyone good with choosing mice! I had used my Dell mouse for many years and it was getting old so I bought myself a Logitech G9x - I HATE this mouse with passion. It is so fat and short and it doesn't fit my hand at all! I am strictly an FPS gamer however a side-button to turn Fraps on/off would be nice :D. What I am looking for is a mouse with:

- 600-2000 DPI
- Something that is narrower and longer then the G9x...
- Something similar to a Dell Mouse (Long, narrow, black ones, you know right?)
- Something that will work in an FPS!
- I am a quick-scoper so easy push buttons would be nice too haha. :D
- I use a Steelseries 9HD no-friction mouse pad!

Right now I was looking at the Logitech Mx518 - if anyone owns this mouse can you please post about its dimensions and overall feel?

Thank you all very much!

I was hesitant to switch to the MX518 from my DeathAdder, but it's definitely a great mouse once you get used to it. I would recommend it to anyone as probably the most comfortable mouse I've used, and it lacks any random bugs or problems that I always seem to find on others.

i'd recommend Razer Lachesis

I have the older version, and it works like charm after 4 years of usage

I don't have enough money for Razers or Roccats so I got an A4Tech X7-710BH, cheaper than other gaming mouses but is a good choice.

I own an old MX518 1600dpi version and have so for years.
Probably since 06 or 07.

The down dpi button stopped working every time for some reason even though I rarely use it.
Possibly down to dirt.
After using it often in Mass Effect 2, it started to work again.

The matt black finish on the plastic does eventually wear out leaving a smooth black surface.
The black on the Logitech emblem wore off.
Both a non issue unless you're concerned about looks.

I suppose it is considered a large, long mouse with a medium weight to it.

The only other mouse I could recommend like it would be the new G5 since it appears to have better positioning of the dpi buttons, has a display to tell you what dpi level, weight adjustable and has a higher dpi than the MX518.

RAT 7 sounds like the mouse for you, I'm not sure if it is thinner than a G9x, grip wise it might be, but you can adjust it to fit your hand, I love mine. And it has a few nicely placed hotkeys, as well as a button to drop your DPI for sniping in FPS's. It's a great mouse, and it looks like artwork sitting on a mouse pad.

I swear by the A4Tech X750BF for a cheap, but awesome gaming mouse. I love mine. I tried a bunch of others, but always come back to this.

I like my logitech g500 it's really smooth durable and comfort.

Yeah, I got that too, good mouse with excellent adaptability. Some peeps say it can't be good build quality but it's solid. But having just placed it next to my old G9 laser, it's actually a tad wider :ohwell:

Any razer mouse! i love razer! they are amazing!!!!

I've used Logitechs, Razers, and a RAT. My experience: Logitech MX 518 is a wonderful mouse. The RAT 7 is a cheap piece of crap gimmick that has horrific bugs and shoddy build quality (but some adore it). Razer Deathadders are my current favorite. I like the Black Edition, as it does away with all of the shiny black plastic where your hands go, and has been a wonderful partner to my Destructor mousepad.

How about this one?

Funnily enough, I've got a mouse pad that has those "b00bs". Coming from japan, I wonder why that doesn't surprise me! But it really helps to rest your hand tbh!

Back on topic though, I would recommend any mouse that suits your budget. Down the years, I've learned that it all comes down to personal taste and what you expect from it. Also, the price! I've got a g500 after some recommendations here, I couldn't be more happier. Its been rock solid. And it has smoooth scroll for those long web pages! And Logitech support is great. I had to open up the mouse, which damaged the teflon feet, they sent me new ones for free.

go for a logitech G500!

Yeah the MX518 is the fall back mouse, cheap and know it's going to get the job done. I'm really surprised you have that opinion on the RAT 7. Nothing on my slides around, I could probably push pretty hard on the thumb rest without causing it to slide in (a lot harder than I should ever need to squeeze a mouse), pinky rest is solid and never moves, and same with the back sliding palm rest. I'm not personally a big fan of Razers, mostly because their basic design was originally a ambidexterous gaming mouse, the Death Adder obviously isn't that, but the design is still very symmetrical, I just don't find them too comfortable.

I've never had any luck with Razer mice, think all of mine have been rma'd at least twice now.

The most comfortable mouse I've used in a long time is the Alienware Tactx (a g9x with a full body). In terms of "cheap" mice, I love me some Cyber Snipa Stinger.

Wow thank you everyone for all of the advice! I love the pic too :D Does anyone know of a store that would actually let me try the mouse out in my hand before purchase?

Knowing where youre from would be a good start

I had a Tactx, it was decently comfortable, I would say my Logitech MX Revolution takes the cake for my most comfortable, then the RAT 7, then the Tactx.

Like said, it matters where you live, and even then, if they have the mice. Like Bestbuy will have Logitech Mice for the most part, but you venture beyond that and you probably won't be able to try them out anywhere.

Razer Deathadder was by far the most comfortable mouse I ever owned but I have shovel hands. Using a mx518 now as I got it cheap. mx518 has better build quality for sure. I would recommend either though.

Since owning a Razer Mamba, I couldnt go back to using any of the other mouse(es) that I have had.

-wireless yet ultra responsive and ultra smooth. (refresh of 1000 'beats' per seconds.....or should that be 1000Hz?)
-up to 5000dpi with 'on the fly' sensitivity switching buttons.
-big easy to hit main buttons and thumb buttons.
-mousewheel button which can be used very easily as 'melee' button without activating the mousewheel function instead (this is an important one to me).
-long slim design

This is however an expensive mouse. Dont think there was a more expensive one in the shop where I bought it (Saturn, Hamburg). Also I bought this mouse around 1 year ago and I am sure there are improved versions on the market now.

I have to vote for the good ole MX518! Ive had one for over three years and its still working good (besides the DPI buttons broke off due to shipping from IRAQ)

I tried to like it, I really did. I posted most of my reactions on the humongous thread about them over at [H]. Either way, I'm happy with where I'm at now :)

OP, I think the MX518 is a perfect place to start :)

I've had bad luck with all of my Razer products. I won't buy from them anymore. They are cheap components that we get charged premium prices for.
