what's your budget?

$100 - $175

I wanna run SC2 proficiently

Its not going to take a monster GPU to run SC2 @ the res of your LCD. A used/new 5770 for about $115 is a pretty good fit I think.

Zigg, anything in the performance range of a 4850, 5750, 5770, GTS 250 and above will max Starcraft 2 out. I get well over 60FPS with my 4850 in SC2 with detail set to very high (even with crossfire disabled). On the downside with a CPU sitting @ 2.1GHz you will run into bottlenecking, I would advise putting money aside for a CPU upgrade too. Either way this will be a huge upgrade coming from integrated video.

Probably best to stick to something relatively low power too since you probably have a Bestec PSU.

Would it be more cost effective to start over? I was trying to squeeze this one just to play SC2 without lag.

Well, Star Craft 2 is a pretty CPU intensive game. That being said, you might as well start off with buying a GPU and trying it in your current system. If that isn't to your liking, then go ahead and build something from scratch. :)

I'm convinced that if you spend say $80-130 on a GPU alone you'd be happy with Starcraft 2, only because its considered one of the better optimised games. But you'd soon run into trouble once you start playing other new games. If SC2 is all you play drop the bread on a cheap video card. If you want to get more involved in PC gaming then stick your entire rig on Ebay and sell it for cheap and let us help you select components worthy of gaming.

I looked up your motherboard on the internet, it has no support for the latest Athlon II or Phenom II processors (it might still work unofficially), so aside from more ram (which you do not need) you're stuck with a GPU upgrade as your only means of performance enhancement.

grab a 5750 or 5770

but you are going to be CPU limited you need a upgrade across the board if you wanna max sc2 out
I have no trouble on mine @ 1280x1024 but @ 1600x1200 I need to turn the texture quality down
upgrading A emachine is a exercise in foolish ness
save up and do a proper upgrade!

LOL! Well put!

I'm just trying to get by on SC2. I was playing WC3 until recently and that is 2003 game.

I like blizzard games. I don't really know too many PC games with strong online competition.

What games would I need a new system for? I always love to learn about new games!

How I know which GPUs are compatible with my setup?

Only SC2, and games from 2003, keep your current rig and buy the video card.

GTA IV, Metro 2033, Stalker series, BFBC 2, Supreme Commander 2 etc. Most new games require either top tier dual cores, or some sort of average tri/quad core to run well.

How I know which GPUs are compatible with my setup?

From a technological standpoint, all GPUs are compatible with your system because it has a PCI-E slot. From a realistic standpoint some upper-midrange and high-end GPUs will require a new powersupply and the bottlenecking would make the upgrade unfeasible.

Without dropping a lot of money into your rig, without upgrading your PSU or CPU the best and cheapest video card is probably the Nvidia GTS 250, if you are reluctant to drop any money on this computer but need something to hold you off a month or two, get the ATI 5670.
SAPPHIRE 100287VGAL Radeon HD 5670 (Redwood) 512MB...
SPARKLE SXS250512D3L-NM GeForce GTS 250 512MB 256-...
ASUS ENGTS250/DI/512MD3/WW GeForce GTS 250 512MB 2...
SAPPHIRE 100284L Radeon HD 5750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 ...

Edit:

I don't really know too many PC games with strong online competition.

Pretty much all PC games have strong online competition, pc games revolutionised it.

From the top of my head, here is a list of PC game series with a huge online communities:

First personshooter:
Call of Duty
Battlefield
Medal of Honor
Quake
Couterstrike
Unreal Tournament
Team Fortress
Operation Flashpoint
America's Army
Ghost Recon
Arma
SWAT

MMORPGs:
Guildwars
Final Fantasy
Warcraft
Warhammer
Conan
Aion
Eve

RTS:
C&C
Red Alert
Supreme Commander
Age of Empires
World in conflict

better idea is to pick out one or two setups you like, and then let us nit pick the fine details for you.

Heya Zigg! If you don't mind buying second hand, their is a gtx260 for sale in the BST subforum for $100.

EDIT:

Just noticed the pwer supply. Take a peak at that 5670 :)

Id get the HIS 5670, air out the back of the case is great since your e-machines is lacking in the airflow department.
Also it don't need a pci-e power connector which you may or may not have and it wont stress the PSU near as much.

Taken from a newegg review
"Pros: just awesome, and i have an old gateway gt5428, with a 300 watt psu"

If you spend more than $110 get the 5750 - get the cheapest one
Do not spend more than $110 on a GTS 250 - get the cheapest one
Do not spend more than $80 on the 5670 - get the cheapest one

Performance wise 5750 > GTS 250 > 5670.

IMO, your PC is a POS, I would invest as little as possible on it and get the cheapest 5670 I could find. It should be enough to play Starcraft 2 at medium detail (not high because your CPU) at a respectable frame rate. In the mean time you can still play well optimised games like the Call of Duty series, research components and read reviews for a few months and then around Christmas put some money aside like $500-700 and put together your own custom gaming rig.

Between the GTS 250 and the HD5670, of course I'll pick the GTS 250
In high resolution GTS 250 pwns HD5670 pretty nice :D
HD5750 is a nice choice though if your budget is available :D
Why don't you wait for the GTS 450 to come out. Are you on a rush playing SC2 :toast:

Faith, have you seen his computer?

Its a old E-machine running a old Athlon X2 @ 2.1GHz, that is crying out bottleneck, this rig isnt equipped for high resolution, his rig would probably make the GTS 450 handicapped. lol

The only advantages to getting a more midrange card like the GTS 450 is that he can carry it over to his new computer, but he'll lose the prospect of buying something much faster like the 5850 or GTX 460, unless he sells his GTS 450 which might be another hassle.

Thanks for everything. The chances that I will use a GTS 450 on a new build is slim and its not worth the hassle to sell it later.

I will just have to go cheap until I can build new.

Doesn't ATI have driver issues for SC2 like long Alt-Tab times and inefficient AA implementations? If you play that game a lot, I'd suggest using a Nvidia card.
