Hello everyone!

So recently have made a pretty big jump since I upgraded from my old 8GB RX 580 to a 10GB RTX 3080, but the problem is that I think that the RTX 3080 is bottlenecking my CPU (which is a Ryzen 5 5600X) so I wanted to ask a few questions:
- is it worth it to stay on the AM4 platform or should switch to the AM5 socket?
- and which CPUs do you recommend the most for both sockets?
I'm from Czechia and my budget is around 800-950€, I plan on using this build for 1440p gaming and also video recording and editing. oh and btw I would like to hear some of your recommendations on coolers, because I don't really know if it's worth it to stay with the AMD Stock cooler or to use something better.

thanks in advance

5600x is not bottlenecking your rtx 3080 by much (especially not at 1440p)
it is still quite capable "little" cpu -
it only falls short 20% on average VS the best gaming cpu of today 9800X3D at 1440p (and 30% at 1080p)
(and thats if tested with rtx 4090 which is massively more powerful video card compared to rtx 3080)
therefore if you want to notice any meaningful difference you would need to upgrade to chips with fastest single core performance of today
(14700K, 9600x/9700x , 7800X3D or 9800X3D)
even than your FPS would not change by much .

so is it worth it to invest north of €500 into a new cpu+motherboard+ram with your current gpu?! - no it´s not

the cheapest way for you to upgrade would be to buy 5700X3D chip and keep your current motherboard and memory sticks
i live right next to you in slovakia and this chip can be found for as low as €150 on a second hand market (i believe you are familiar with "bazos")

it would also help to know the specs of your system not just cpu+gpu
but also specific model of your motherboard , your psu and your memory (its capacity+speed+latency)

however if you want to use your cpu for work than X3D chips are not that great at it .
it all depends on how much you split your time between work and gaming .

for video editing and recording it may be worth while to upgrade to cpu with more cores and threads .
something like 9900x or intel core ultra 7 265K which both excel in cpu demanding applications and they are both sub €450 cpus (core 7 is even sub €400)
9900x is than slightly better for gaming out of the two .

when it comes to coolers there are few good cheap models on the market
for example : https://www.alza.cz/endorfy-fortis-5-black-d12783440.htm
great price to performance cooler available in both our countries .

Just for information from someone From Austria.

My previous ryzen 5800x / 2x32GiB DDR4 / MSI B550 Gaming edge wifi was basically the same as my current Ryzen 7600X / 2x32Gib DDR5 / ASUS Prime X670-p
The 7600x is now a little bit faster. I play in windows 11 pro in whqd with a radeon 7800xt.

You have a 6 core, the ryzen 5800x is a 8core.

Ryzen 7600X / ASUS Prime X670-p / STar wars jedi survivor was 400€ in may 2023. The components still costs the same without the game.

I would not waste any money anymore on am4. the upgrade option Ryzen 5800X, 5700x3d, 5800x3d are not worth it. I doubt you will find those for 30€. So nope.

I recommend to wait for the next AMD-rewards / amd cashback.

The guy above me suggest 9600x. I would not buy that.

I would buy that for myself when there is really a demand for am5:
The cheapest ryzen 7500f (when internal cpu graphics do not matter; I only used that for a few months because i got rid two times in 2023 my graphic cards) or ryzen 7600 or rzyen 7600x.
I also saw sometimes cheap ryzen 7700 bulk processors. Assuming you want to deal with processors wiht limited or no warranty.

video recording and editing

You have to check yourself, which operating system and which software.
Does the software use the nivida cuda cores of your nvidia graphic card? If the software uses cuda cores I assume your platform needs 0 upgrades at all.

-- I would only change the cpu cooler when the temperatures are not alright or the noise is not alright.

e.g. Arctic liquid freezer II 360 / 420 ... or III generation
there are plenty of cheap air coolers on the second hand market. most guys use aio coolers most likely these days.

you can see i also say i would not recommend to pay €500+ for a platform change with the current gpu (not for gaming anyway) .
however 9600x is the cheapest gateway to AM5 platform (not counting older 7500f/7600)
with the latest and greatest single core performance architecture (save X3D chips of course)
it is the best sub €250 gaming cpu on the market right now - however it is not too great for applications
(hence my further questions - OP needs to elaborate to get more accurate/better advice) ...

AIO coolers are needlessly expensive especially if you are on a budget .
they don´t have good price/performance ratio at all .
however the better air cooler is justified since its cheap and you can at least turn on PBO
and it also lowers noise level of your system .

I would consider staying with AM4 for the moment in your case. With the 3080 10GB you won't make a big jump in frametimes (I also do not believe that your 5600x is holding back the 3080 by large).
If gaming is important, consider switching to 5700x3d/5800x3D. If video editing and production is important, just consider 5900x/5950x (they won't be that much faster in gaming compared to your 5600x tough) but will be much faster in video encoding/decoding than the 6 core 5600x (even much faster than the 8 core x3D CPUs). Personally, i would fetch a used 5950x (they are being sold used for approx 200 USD in my country) - they boost higher than the 5600x and are much stronger in Multithreading. 5700x3D reappear new for the same amount of money here if you want an emphasis on gaming (still, the 3080 won't cut it and a lot of the possible performance won't be realized until you upgrade the GPU).

Pick up one of the strong air budget coolers like Thermalright Phantom Spirit/Assassin 120 or ID-Cooling A620 Pro SE or even Arctic Freezer 36, all of which are a steal for their asking price.

If you still want to go AM5/DDR5, think about an 7700x and faster, as that will get you a nice upgrade in compute. Pair that with a cheap B650, cheap DDR5 32GB and one of the coolers mentioned above and it will set you back approx 500€ or slightly more (but you still need to upgrade the GPU to get the most out of that system).

I (personally) would go the 5950x route (when productivity is important but check your VRMs if your board is old because the 5950x has some higher requirements than the weaker CPUs) or with the 5700x3D / 5800x3D (when I want to improve my gaming frametimes and productivity is not the main profile). In both cases you will get away with about 250€ and it will be enough for the 3080. I even bet you will perceive the small boost from i.e. an 5800x3D in productivity compared to your 5600x (because of the additional two cores).

Unless you do videos and play games for money, I would advise against purchasing anything. Wait until you feel it's no longer an okay system. By that time, CPUs will be better than today so you'll get a more significant jump.

5600X is still a good gaming processor.

As for cooling, yeah anything will be better than stock cooler. Look for Thermalright PS120SE for the best bang for buck option.

+1 to used 5700X3D. For coolers grab a thermalright Phantom Spirit EVO or Peerless Assassin if you can grab one.
