I have the new X-box 360 S with the built in wireless, and have a heap of problems keeping it connected to my D-Link router. I thought it was the console but it turned out the problem is the router.

I need advice on getting a proper router that is going to work flawlessly with the 360.

Any body suggest a compatible router? It needs to be a N band

Thanks

Range has nothing to do with it, and every router should be compatible with the adapter, that is why they are standards. If you are getting connection issues with wireless it is because you are either on the edge of the range of the wireless, or there is something interferring with it.

Either way, the power line adapters will give you a more stable connection at speeds faster than wireless N.

The problem may just be something to do with the router settings, it may be worth checking the type of security key your using for your wireless, I say this as I've had the same problem occur, well almost I had it on a Wii and I had to change the type of security key I was using for my home network.

I flashed to the newest firmware, reset the router, using WEP setting with key...

The wifes laptop has no problems at all with the wireless and they are the same distance away from the router... Signal isnt a problem... I needed to turn down the broadcast cus of ppl trying to steal my connection... But either way some times the 360 sees the network, next time it dont...I scan and it shows and the next time it dont... Some times it connects and other times it wont. It just brings up connection error blah blah.

The router is flakey the best of times and I know its not a signal problem...

Try turning your wireless key off (remember to turn your router off and on again after this process) and then seeing if your able to connect to it with your xbox, if your able to do so then it's obviously a problem with the type of key - just remember to re-use the same key when reapplying the password (saves the hassle of other users having to type new password).

Most laptops have better internal antennas than the Xbox360. So just because it works with the laptop doesn't mean it isn't a signal problem with the Xbox360. Laptops usually have long antennas that run up the side of the LCD screen, while the Xbox360 S has no antennas, it is just a tiny PCB that plugs into a USB port.

Ok thats good to know. I was just talking to a buddie of mine that runs a internet cafe and is kinda a wiz at networking and as soon as I told him the problem the first think he said was *your using a D-link hey* Thats the problem right there, from what he said is this brand and model number is a bad one to use.

Whoo am I to argue

D-Links are bad yes, this is also why the WRT54GL + Tomato was posted, its a VERY VERY good router.

chances are its still a signal problem or it has an issue with WEP / WPA key.

use WPA encyption with a 12+ charactor password and turn the signal all the way up. NO ONE is going to be able to crack it, let alone try.
(i should know, i have cracked WEP and WPA wifi networks. with permision of course.)

On my Dlink UPnP didn't work right which is a big deal for multiple consoles and WPA would cause all wireless connections to "clog" at some points, they wouldn't lose connection they would just stop responding.

I never did get it working even tried 6 different firmwares eventually gave up and bought my Netgear.

What ever router you get Open Source firmware is the way to go make sure you get one that works well with it.

The Linksys E3000 is a Sweet ass router

Setup is easy as taking candy from a baby, and to top things off... the 360 slim picks it up every single time :rockout: no muss no fuss lol. I went outside with the wifes lappy and ran a speed test while she was doing on-line gaming... It's speed was right inline with what im paying for...
