ok i have a MSI-K9MM-V Mobo and when i hvae a cd drive hooked up it wont boot it doesnt read my HD when i unhook my cd drive it boots just fine cables are all good idk whats wrong

Do you have the jumpers set correctly for master/slave/cable select? The HDD should be master, the optical drive (should be on it's own channel and not on the same channel as the HDD unless it's your only IDE channel) on slave.

Uh... make sure the cd is set in master

the jumpers are set corectly the cables good and conections are all good idk what to do at this point:banghead:

How do you have them set? Do you have more than one IDE channel?

single IDE chanel and HD is master and Cd is slave

Make the CD master, HD slave. Just make sure you have the HD set before the CD in the BIOS (boot priority)

ive tried that one to ive tried about eveything i can think of idk maybe mobo?

Silly question, but are you sure the cable is plugged in the right way? I've seen some cables that were not keyed, and some drives that were dual-keyed.

Is this a newer optical drive? Are you using an 80-wire Ultra-DMA cable, or a standard? I've had issues with new drives and using the old cables labeled "CD-rom" from my mobo (40-wire single device cable).

Have you tried this CD-rom in another computer? Have you tried another optical drive in this computer? These two will help eliminate some of the variables (ie is the drive busted or the controller?). You could even try no HDD and booting from the CD-rom drive.

yes im using ultra 80 and ive tried three other drives and idk im just goin to replace the mobo at this point

Ok, it sounds like the controller on the mobo is bad, but have you tried the original drive in another computer? BTW, did you check the molex/power connection to make sure it's secure?

Are you happy with the motherboard and otherwise have no problems? You could either RMA it back to MSI, or you could add a controller like lemonadesoda suggested.

yeah ive tried it in a nother comp and my power conectors are all good and secure and i dont like this mobo that much since its a micro atx and its agp

Sounds like you've already made your decision then...

yeah thank you for your help though:)

You're welcome. When you get the new board in drop another line here saying whether of not everything works. :toast:

Oh, and if the MSI is still under warranty try to RMA it. At least you could sell the new board here in the forums and get back a few $$ from it.

ok so i finally got a new board and vid card i have now a ATX abit AN52 mobo with a nvidia520 chipset and a HIS x1650 pro 512 and everything works great! :)
