Am limited on funds and this is more like a trial run????

Am going to install new motherboard : DFI 945G-TMGF
Socket 775, Intel Pentium 4 Prescott, 1066MT/s, PCI Express, Dual-Channel DDR2 667, Intel GMA 950 graphics, 6-channel audio, S/PDIF, 4 SATA 3Gb/s, 1 Gigabit LAN, 2 IEEE 1394 and 8 USB 2.0.

CPU: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 530 - SL7J6
3 GHz 04A 800 MHz 15 1 MB 3 GHz. HT
Arctic Silver paste

Fan & Heatsink: Arctic-Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

PSU: Hi-Power (KC480) P4 20/24PIN ATX Switching Power Supply Dual fan

Memory: KINGSTON KVR667D2N5K2/1G

Will probably take the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 PCI card am using now unless I can get a PCI-e card right away.

Am keeping the hardrive, DVD/CD drive, front card reader/usb, front audio/1394 and fax/modem pci adapter

I have backed up files that I want to keep so far.

What next??????????????

Do I need to get rid of stuff on the hard drive or use it like it is? As you can see it is partitioned with recovery on D: (C: is NTSF and D: is FAT32 - why different?)

Can I use the existing OS? I do have another XP disc from kids computer (Not upgrade but full edition)

Can I just take the guts out and install new and reboot ? Am thinking there is definately more to it than that.

What a constructive post :p

As for actually answering your question, you should really format at least the partition which XP itself is installed on, and in theory you should probably be buying a new copy of XP (unless you are transferring a retail version from another computer). If the disk came with a PC, odds are that it's OEM and therefore is only allowed to be used on one motherboard. I'm not saying it won't work, I'm just saying what you should legally do.

Although you may be able to boot up straight away with the new components, it's such a big change that I would be worried about driver conflicts, although you could try it. Personally I would format and reinstall XP.
