board: SOYO P4I865PE Dragon 2

condition: board is 4 years old with no problems until now

problem: cannot save changes in cmos

bios chip: Winbond W49VQQ2FAP

i upgraded my system to a 3.4ghz p4 from my old 2.8ghz p4 and did a clean install of xp. the board was rated for 3.4 ghz so im ok there.

i cleared cmos to default settings and then set it up for my new CPU.

i went to exit and save settings but when i clicked "y" to "yes save settings" it froze.

i could hear the "dong" in speakers when i hit the enter key so it is sending the keystroke but it doesn't seem to accept it.

i turned off power to restart. after restart i find the settings were not saved.

i realized i should shut down with CTRL+ALT+DEL so i tried that after it froze again.

CTRL+ALT+DEL rebooted the computer and also saved the new cmos settings so i'm ok there, but why can't i save bios setting normaly? what is going on to cause this?

i swapped out to the original cpu and it still would freeze when saving bios settings.

i reflashed with the latest bios and it still would freeze when saving bios settings.

i replaced the bios battery and it still would freeze when saving bios settings.

i was wondering if it was a board issue or a bad bios chip issue?

the computer works fine and it boots and runs normal with no problems.

i replaced the MB fearing it was going out but i want to fix it so i can reuse this board.

am i correct in assuming it is a bad bios chip and not a board issue?

if soyo wants too much $ for it, how do i go about getting a replacement bios chip?

are bios chips generic parts like ram memory sticks?

i don't know anyone with spare boards to get a chip from to try it.

I doubt anything is physically wrong with the Winbond chip, their chips are awesome quality. Have you tried updating your BIOS to the latest available for the board?

My corrupted BIOS chip was manufactured by winbond. Even though it's unlikely, it does happen from time to time.

He said in his previous thread that he updated the BIOS to the latest version.

Please don't make threads for what is basically the same problem. You tend to get asked the same questions again, so it takes a while for people to get caught up again.

sorry but it wouldn't let me add the picture unless i made a new thread.

new bios chip made no difference but i'm $16 poorer now lol.

will nail it to a tree and use board for target practice.
