Need new monitor...

Had a storm here this morning, long power outtage, and in the end my 27" monitor is dead. On a fixed income so budget is important. Since I sit right in front of it, I think a 24" is sufficient but I would like fast and preferably ips.
My secondary monitor, which is now my main, is an ips 23. somthing and is fine for watching tv ect on. If I'm not planning on using the main monitor for tv ect would a fast tn panel be good enough? Like 1ms type. Is there any point in freesync with my 980ti? If all I'm going to get is 1080 at 60hz, then not much point in spending 100 bucks more for the high frequency monitors.

all depends on your price range what i can recommend, i am an expert at monitors though.

Under 300 can. I only run at 1080 res so I'd like fast and good quality pic. 24" is enough.
And I have to buy from newegg.ca.
Also most of my games are old, and will run at over 100fps at ultra on my card. I run linux so new
games aren't on my list for now. So would a high refresh monitor look better for me?
My main monitor will be used mainly for gaming, and I will be sitting right in front of it, so ips
probably isn't needed.

My main monitor is an AOC AG241QX, which is a 1440p 144Hz monitor with 1ms response time. My GTX 1070 has little trouble driving it at high settings in games (I think the 980 Ti is about as powerful as the 1070). Even though it's a TN monitor, I think the colors and picture quality are perfectly fine (I don't do any professional color work).

I stopped using FreeSync because the range of this monitor isn't great, and I haven't noticed much of a difference since turning it off. But I didn't think 900 series cards supported it anyway.

It doesn't meet your criteria perfectly, and it's over your budget, I got mine for $270 US ($355 CA) and for some reason you can only get it for $455 CA, but if you can stretch your budget, I'd consider it.

yeah monitors in Canada are a bit tougher to come by, which is why i had to be strict on my recommendations if it were america, I'd recommend him a pixio 27" 95hz IPS 10 bit 1440p for $259 USD. direct from newegg.

Edit: I did pull the trigger on the LG 144hz 1ms monitor... because why not....

yep its not a bad price for 144hz 1080p for being Canada anyway.

be prepared to calibrate colors and contast and brightness though, use nvidia control panel or monitor directly to calibrate. probably will need a bit of extra saturation to make the colors pop. don't judge it just when you plug it in, I know 100% it will require calibration, LG always does regardless of panel type.

This monitor AOC below would be in your range, but if you want future proof. I would just go with 1440p freesync or gsync monitor. Freesync is also cheaper, Nvidia now enable on most of their 1000 series and 2000 series Graphic card.

You would use the display settings to select he refresh rate. You should 60,120 & 144 to choose from.

144hz will work on linux or windows... just change refresh rate in nvidia control panel. @johnspack

Thanks guys, I checked it out and yes I should be able to select 144 just fine under linux. I may even be able to enable g-sync, although whether it works well or not will be another story.
