Ok hopefully I have all the info on this.I tried to call Best Buy but they were closed so thought Id try here and figure out what it would roughly cost.

The processer when booted up comes up with an ASUSA7V8X-X
256MB RAM DDR..DM 184,K...THIS IS ON THE MEMORY CHIP ITSELF(RAM)32 WKD STK 4562963.Any help researching this would be greatly appreciated. She has 3 slots on her motherboard. Was thing about getting her a 512 chip to go along with her 256.Depends on how much $$$. Thanks all. WASPMAN

Ok what? So you have a 256 mb DDR ram right? You want to upgrade it to 768 mb of DDR ram? Money? How much do you have? If you give us a budget we can try and find a deal for you.

you should be able to grab a 512 for $50 @ the store, $25 online...$70 @ bestbuy lol

for whatever reason memory at bestbuy is expensive. why not get a 1GB stick? what operating system are you running/planning to run on that system?

Under $50, 1 GB sticks DDR400 Shipping is $4.99 so you'd have to go with the cheapest. Also this is DDR not DDR2 memory, right? If you want a little cheaper, just go for a slower speed Ram.

Specs

This memory is for my niece. She has a 1.4 gyg processer with 256 mb ram.Im not sure exactly with these specs what her ddr speed is.Im running a 3.0 gyg processer with 2 gyg ram ddr 400. WASPMAN

Grab her a 1gb kit from newegg, she'll be much happier. But one thing idk is how much that can help a 1.4 ghz cpu. What os are you running on her comp? Also, is that a celeron or a p4 or a p3 (it'd have to be oc'ed).

Not Known

It's an ASUS 1.4.I just cleaned her computer up from spyware and other crap.Id just like to get her another computer but this way is cheaper.A7V8X-X.Thats the logo that pops up when booted up.Dont know if that helps or not. WASP

Ok, so it does use DDR. I think 1 GB of ram would do her alot of good. 512 mb is also an acceptable amount for xp.

I have a US Modular 1024MB PC2100-266MHz DDR Memory, I have been trying to sell I want 40.00. This is still new in the original package-never used, I could ship it USPS Priority. If this would work for ya.

Yes

Yeah she has 256 mb ram ddr.My thought on this being an older computer is Im thinking it WOULD NOT BE 400,what do you think?

It will run DDR400 (PC3200). Even if the other RAM isn't DDR400, the motherboard will make both memory sticks run at the lower speed.

Exactly, doesn't matter if you buy faster than what she has.

I have heard that if u mis match the speed could cause in stability. Is this really the case or would it depend on the motherboard?

You can always run the RAM at the lower speed than is rated. So if you had a DDR266 stick and a DDR400 stick, the motherboard will make the DDR400 stick run at DDR266 speeds.

Also, you'll never be able to run two sticks (or more) of RAM with each different speeds. The motherboard won't allow it.

It is true that some boards can be picky with different manufacturers of RAM. But this is very, very rare. So long as you buy RAM that is from a major producer, i.e. Kingston, Cosair, Crucial are just a few that come to mind(not some no-name mystery RAM, you're ok)

Hope this helps.

Thanks, reason I mentioned that was my system had 512MB DDR pc-3200, but I thought it had pc2100 thats why I got that us modular i listed earlier, but then I heard that if I put that us modular 2100 in my system would be unstable-I was wondering if that was true or if my pc repair guy was ripping me.

No problem, just wanted to clear that in case it confused Waspman.

If you put the PC2100 into your system, you'll have to run both RAM sticks at the slower, PC2100 speed. Unless the repair guy knew that your motherboard or US modular RAM has some unique issues, I don't forsee a problem.

Why not go SDRAM like I have? It's simple. PC100 and PC133 will work no problem, and there's no worry about stability if you're using PC100 and PC133 at the same time :toast:

Kinda of hard to do SDRAM PC100 or 133 when he needs DDR. I at least know this much. LOL

Oh. I always thought they were the same socket?
