Network Storage Solutions

I have multiple harddrives (8 in all internal/external), I am looking for the best way to get them on my network (ie, out of my desktop computer and desktop). I was wondering what the best way to do this was. I have thought about building a server for it but was wondering if that was my best way?

I would appreciate all possible solutions...

solutions are to make a server and share them somehow (windows sharing is common)

Install some alternative OS and turn that machine into a NAS

Buy a NAS (or several)

chuck them all in an E-SATA cage like mine, and share them when neccesary

i think i would rather have a computer filled with controllers as a NAS than one of those expensive ones
