New GPU. No signal on one DisplayPort. Bad port or am I missing something?

Hi all,

Just purchased an ASUS TUF RX 6800 XT. The upgrade has gone well so far up to this point. I use 3 monitors with this PC which I connected to my previous GPU via 2 x DisplayPort and 1 x HDMI. When I swapped in this new GPU, I used the same connections. The new GPU has 3 x DisplayPort and 1 x HDMI and after getting comfortable with the card I decided to switch the third monitor to DisplayPort as well for consistency I suppose.

I cannot get any signal from the outermost DisplayPort. The monitor detects no signal and goes into standby. I switched out the cable and still no signal. I disconnected one of the other DisplayPort cables going to another monitor and still no signal. I've ruled out the cable and the monitor, I've reinstalled drivers (to rule out everything) and the conclusion I'm coming to is the card has a bad DisplayPort output.

Is there something I may have missed that could be causing 1/3 DisplayPorts to not work?

Thanks in advance.

You say that you ruled out cables and monitors. Did you managed to run your third monitor and the cable you used for that monitor on one of the other dp ports? The reason I ask is that I managed to kill a dp cable connecting it to running GPU. Could have been a coincident that my cheap cable/monitor died.

Yes, I was able to run the third monitor using one of the other DP outputs. I also was able use the third DP cable to run one of the other monitors on one of the good DP outputs. At this point I've been able to run all 3 monitors using all 3 DP cables from one of the good DP outputs. It feels like it's just a bad DP output on the GPU at this point.

Something interesting: When all 3 monitors are connected via the 3 DP outputs, 2 show display, the third no display in standby (suspected bad DP output). I noticed that I was getting a stutter when moving my mouse around the screen. Pressing the power button on the monitor with no display would resolve the stuttering.

It's like the stuttering is from the third monitor and GPU continuously trying to connect or something? That's my best guess because this isn't something I've ever seen before.

Check display properties.

Id say Return the gpu and get a Sapphire

If that one port doesnt work even when the other ports are disconnected, its a faulty port

There are many GPU's out there that only allow 3 of the 4 ports to be used at any one time, but if you've disconnected some of the others that's not the issue

Yeah, even when all other ports are disconnected I get no output. Unfortunate. The port shows no obvious signs of damage. I guess it just slipped past Asus's QA on the way out of the factory.

I feel like I would've found it by now. I've gone through what feels like all the various display settings in both Windows and Radeon Software at this point. I'm also not aware of a software setting that would disable one DisplayPort output and leave the other two DisplayPort outputs enabled. If someone does know a setting in software that could do this please point me to it!

Maybe connect them all on the DP ports and tell windows to detect screens and see if that works, although it does sound like a faulty card :(. Nothing at boot either ?.

No luck. Windows never detects anything connected through that one DP port. Nothing at boot either. The only change I notice with the system when a monitor is connected to the dead DisplayPort is a noticeable hitch/stutter every 0.5 seconds or so when moving moving my mouse around or navigating windows. When I turn off the monitor connected the the dead DisplayPort the hitch/stutter goes away.

So while the port it definitely defective, it does appear to be doing something.

Maybe it has a dual bios which use different outputs? At least that's the thing on my old HD 7970 Matrix, 6 outputs (2x DVI, 4x DP) but not every output works at once, it needs to have the bios switched for different outputs.

Your old 7970 sounds interesting. My GPU does have dual bios (Performance and Silent). I have already tried both of them and there is no output from the bad DisplayPort in either of them. I was checking to see if maybe the default bios was corrupted and that was causing the issue. I appreciate the input either way.

Hm, that truly sounds like a defective output like mentioned already. I'd RMA it if it's absolutely neccessary, and if you can get a replacement immediately. Dunno what's the exact GPU situation there (= do you need to wait weeks to get a replacement one).

That's my concern. I Purchased the GPU through Newegg. Currently the GPU is out of stock so they will only refund me. RMA through ASUS is $25 shipping just to have them look at the card with no idea on turnaround time. Not to mention ASUS's Support appears to be hit or miss.

I'm tempted to just keep the card. The bad DisplayPort isn't an issue in the short term, it just leaves really makes me less enthusiastic about this upgrade.

Take the refund - don't pay top dollar for something defective. Best Buy has had 6800 XT's in stock off and on. Currently they have a Gigabyte for $1319.

Take the refund - don't pay top dollar for something defective. Best Buy has had 6800 XT's in stock off and on. Currently they have a Gigabyte for $1319.

Screw Gigabyte haha.

Although not the only one out there.

Here in Finland it's normal to void warranty if a product has physical defects. At least I don't find that surprising at all.

If one customer has two GPU's cracked in the same spot, i'd be thinking that was user error as well

That said, we need to get this back on topic and help mister dead display port
