Intel's upcoming 5 GHz-on-all-cores Core i9-9900KS will certainly be a beast of a processor for the company - in more ways than one. The 8-core, 16-thread 5 5 GHz all-core turbo CPU will be Intel's best-performing consumer CPU for a while. The steps taken to ensure that have been the only ones Intel could do with their current CPU design and fabrication process - increase the TDP and improve all-core boost frequency, which should allow the CPU to perform incredibly well in peak performance.

The question that remains, of course, is how long the CPU will actually be able to keep its 5.0 GHz all-core frequency when it's engaged. The 127 W TDP as outed by an ASUS BIOS is a monstrous amount for an 8-core CPU, and I don't envy the heatsinks that will have to keep it in check. All in all, this seems to be nothing more than a CPU binned for Intel's purposes of becoming the best CPU for gaming and "home user relevant applications".

127 watt for 8 cores and knowing intel this is just for the base clock of 4 GHz, so for 5 GHz all core this CPU is properly having a TDP of around 200 watt give or take a bit. Yawn nothing new here. Its just a binned I9 9900K with a factory overclock.

I aint falling for this one intel either.
 
34% higher TDP for 11% higher base and 6% higher boost clocks... Should have called it i9-9590FX at this point.

You need four GTX 480 for the grill party to really kick of. Grill and play at the same time...while burning the house down. Thats a proper party.

The 127 W TDP is for the base clock only, not the all core 5Gh boost


Hey, people are offended that you cast a questioning or any kind of light on Intel and their TDP interpretation of what it could mean. Or their boost clocks and how it will be cooked, I mean cooled....

AMD would probably be more threatened by a 9700KS rather than this hot monstrosity. 8 cores at 5 GHz would be plenty to secure the gaming crown and wouldn't REQUIRE watercooling to actually hit those speeds with any sort of reliability. This thing is going to be too expensive and too hot to capture anyone but the most ardent Intel fans.

It's kind of nice to see Intel panicking like this. I was one of the people that thought that AMD spinning off GloFo was a bad idea but it's put them in a position where all they need to do is focus on the processor design rather than the processor creation design. This is what's killing Intel right now. Because they are so vertically integrated, they've been hunting the 10 nm whale without any market pressure on the fab side. TSMC had to solve real problems to get 7 nm up so they could make money. Intel only had to keep their processor sales moving, so the foundry could, well, founder without warning bells ringing. We're getting closer and closer to 8 thread processors being commodity products, and that means lower prices for everyone but the halo crowd.

While I do agree on a "9700KS".
Good Noctua coolers can cool up to about 250W fine, but the problem with i9-9900K already is energy density, and an i9-9900KS at 4.0/5.0 GHz would struggle more. Water cooling wouldn't really make a difference.

Exactly what I was thinking. A massive power consumption increase for a modest performance increase, this isn’t technological innovation, it’s going backwards. I feel that during all those uncontested years while AMD was hibernating Intel lost the ability to innovate. Pretty sure they’re awake now.
