Hello,

I have a PC which I'm using for 3 years, and I want to upgrade some parts, but I'm not sure if I really could do that. So, I need your advice to decide. I created a thread on TechPowerUp Forums to get professional advice, they were pretty good and helped me a lot!

Now, I need your advice, again with my new build. Though, I'm not sure if I really need to build a new PC with new pieces of hardware. Because my current build seems good, except the RAMs. I'm not sure... Please help me! :D

First, I will share my first build, then it will follow pieces of hardware that I want to buy. After all of these, there will be a "noob" question, too.

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 MHz
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97M-D3H
RAM: 10 GB (8+2 - Kingston)
Case: CORSAIR Carbide 400R MidT ATX
Power Supply: Corsair CX750 ATX 80PLUS (750W)
Graphic Card: GTX 1070 GAMING X 8G

Below, you can find the new build that I want to upgrade.

CPU: Intel Core i5 9600K Processor 3.70GHz 9MB Cache LGA1151 HD630
Motherboard: MSI MotherBoard Z390-A Pro Intel Z390 2133MHz DDR4 Socket 1151
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB(2x8GB) 2400MHz DDR4

Now, the noob question is here; I have Windows 10 Home Edition licence. If I change the motherboard or other key parts, will the licence be able to in use again?

Above all else, do I really need to change the parts? The reason that I'm changing is "chain". Yes, chain. Well, a socket of my current motherboard is not working. So, if I change a RAM, I need to find 16GB DDR3 RAM. I have 3 sockets working now. If I replace one with 16 GB RAM, it would be great. I think, Kingston HyperX Fury Red 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM could work, but is that enough?

Thanks,

1. Two sticks of ram is better than one. (Dual channel)

2. This isn't exactly an upgrade of an extreme amount, going from 8 threads to 6 unless you overclock the i5.

3. Looks like you copy/pasted this across other places with the " I created a thread on TechPowerUp Forums to get professional advice, they were pretty good and helped me a lot"

4. If it works, leave it alone. A 4790 is still strong enough for anything modern.

Old board DDR3, Intel cpu socket 1150
New board DDR4, Intel cpu socket 1151 v2
Old board and CPU still good
2x equal amounts of memory of same brand and standard is better than any mixed memory.

Then you are saying that I should choose 2 pieces of Kingston HyperX Fury Red 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Right? By the way, I don't get you with your 3rd line.

Thanks!

It seems I will keep my DDR3 RAM choice.

If you mostly play games you're better off spending a bit (if you can) on the GPU and get a 1080Ti or 2080 :)

I mostly play video games, right, but what's wrong with 1070? Is that too old? I was thinking to keep it. :D

Your 1070 is just fine but in your case a new GPU might be a better investment than a new CPU+platform, you'll see more fps in games by going with the gpu upgrade

Yes but not if he is staying on 1080p. For that resolution the balance is just right without upgrading anything. With this new platform however, faster GPUs will be paying off that much more.

@OP when it comes to Windows Home license, I am going to guess you have an OEM (system builders) license, which is only valid for one motherboard (ie build). You can find ultra cheap keys online tho.

Other than that, solid upgrade path. 6 cores is sufficient and high clocks rule for gaming. Are you chasing high refresh rates, or looking to increase your gaming resolution over time? That should be the deciding factor on whether a new GPU wouldn't provide more of a boost.

Really bad time to buy an Intel CPU right now unless you can get it for MSRP. But 9600K with a decent OC (4.8+) is going to be a fair bit faster than 4790 non-K in CPU bound games, but I'm not sure if it's really worth the upgrade since even the 4790 can do most games at a decent framerate right now.

Can you contact MS support and get the Key transferred even if it's an OEM one? I swear I have done that in the past with an OEM license.

Yes, you can, or you can buy a new one for 5-8 EUR online, so you can actually keep using the old hardware with the OS. Although my experience with transfer of license dates back to Windows 7, and they do have a different delivery model now.

If i where u i would get a 4790K and OC it , and replace that 2GB stick with 8GB one , and get a better GPU (u don't really need to change the card , 1070 is still a beast) , and thats a perfect Gaming machine , Z97 still rocks.

It is your choice what to upgrade and frankly either way you go (GPU or newer platform) you will notice a performance improvement. I would say if you go for the new platform try and get at least 3000mhz memory and if you can add a decent SSD if you don't have one already :)

It is good to read that I still can keep my current setup. :)

Regarding the license, it is not OEM license. If it is not, then I can use it with my new build, right?

Yes. That's sound good. I can purchase 4790K and change RAMs. :)

change the 9600k to a 9700k, and get a faster 16gb kit for dual channel. Nice rig overall tho. Your current rig is still pretty good so i would sell it/ try to get something for those parts.

That's quite expensive for me, I can only afford $650, and as you know, the dollar exchange rate is not the same in any country. It's a lot in my country, so I can only stick with $650, or maybe $700. :D

Thanks by the way!

basically, what you already have will run just about anything, the only possible reason for upgrade that I can see would be if you want to play new battfield mp on a 240hz screen. For that, your system is insufficient, but the "upgrade" you're thinking of will not improve your score by much...

Regarding windows licence, it is connected to your mobo number and memorised on ms servers. If you change the mobo, you will lose the licence. However, contacting ms about it should help, if you activated the licence on your current mobo through a ms account. They can simply transfer it to your new machine. If not, a new licence costs like 2 eur on ebay, no biggy. Or if you have any students in your family, they can get free keys.

Yes. I read about the license issues after posting this thread. Actually, my Windows License is activated on my MS Account, and I guess I will not face any issues about it. I hope. :D

I guess I will continue with RAM choice, it seems alright for now.

I will buy Kingston HyperX Fury Red 8GB 1600MHz DDR3. Maybe next time, I can go with more expensive choices.
