As for the longevity of NMS, I've come back to it since the latest updates (from playing 20 or so hours at release) and find I can still get much enjoyment out of the game as long as I limit the amount of hours I play in one period; it can get oh-so-tedious if playing for a long time in one stretch!

TL;DR

Hype train derailed, half of what was promised was not in the game. Few players like it, most super salty.

Steam reviews don't really give an honest picture of the game. Over half the people there jumped the hype train and thought they were buying a poor man's Star Citizen with procedural generation.

If you approach this game for what it is and can pick it up on sale, this is definitely worth playing though. The concept is pretty good, it just wears off rather quickly. Approach this game like a relaxing exploration simulator with some mild progression goals, and you'll have fun playing it. The procedural content is nice to discover. And that is pretty much all she wrote

I spent about 90 hours in NMS, and that was before the base building update, which does add some flavor and actual goals to your journeys. But I won't be coming back to it anytime soon I think.

Pro tip: remove the HUD and take pictures / look for beautiful vista's. NMS is really about making your own gameplay happen, and this is great way to spend time in the universe. I remember W1zz stealing one of my pics for his NMS benches/reviews ^^

Keep in mind the overwhelming number were from release time. So, even though by all accounts it is a decidedly better game now, it would have to be Game of the Decade to get enough good reviews to counter all the people who bought into the hype beforehand and were disappointed. Always take Steam reviews with a grain of salt.

You'll either enjoy the shit outta this game or you'll want to murder the makers there doesn't seem to be an inbetween I got it on GOG for cheap didn't really pay much attention to hype and rather enjoyed it as something different from what I'd normally play it also helped the Nexus mods has a page with some very helpful mods

There doesn't seem to be a standalone "low flight" mod that works with the latest patch at the moment - gutted!
I have no idea why the planetary flight was designed in such a restricting way, it totally kills the enjoyment of flying!

Crap - I haven't played much at all since the base update was released, but I did happen to put back in the low flight mod I was using and got it working again. I just never got around to playing after.

I hate, hate, hate how the planetary flying is. Always forced above the ground by a good margin is irritating as hell. I loved the low flying mod - especially on planets that had large caves or arches you could fly through...even diving into an ocean and back out was cool.

Why doesn't NMS dev team just fix the low flying restriction like the mods do? I understand the mod is a little glitchy with how it allows you to basically fly your ship anywhere on a world, but it's a whole heck of a lot better than the default planetary flying the game has.

Nope, you're not the only one. I have to scan everything. I've spent a lot of time in a couple of star systems I visited simply due to the fact there were 5 planets and they all had a crap ton of plants and creatures.
