The relative I recently passed on the FuryX to is venturing into VR. Specifically she bought a Valve Index hoping to get the best out of first hand experience. Over the weekend I was trying to help her to set it up. The HMD has power on alright, but there were no display at all. We tried ~10 versions of different drivers and none of them worked. It was then I started search around the net. Annnnd yep, looks like AMD decided to screw the entire R9 owners by dropping Valve Index support completely. Chatting with a SteamVR support personal I was under the impression that AMD failed to implement some motion smoothing technology at driver level for all R9 GPUs.
So just for giggles I plugged in my old trusty OG Vive and it works fine. So the problem is just between Valve Index and R9 GPUs. Apparently Valve provided all the coding needed to add motion smoothing, AMD just did not do it somehow.
Morale of the story: If you have a R9 GPU, might wanna look into a Rift S for better VR support. Sadly this specific girl will be returning the Valve Index to go with Rift S. I will report back once we try Rift S. She is into VR fitness streaming so really need to get it going. The Fury X GPU is working fine like 99% of the time with 19.5.2 driver and a custom fan curve.
EDIT: Oh and also problems with PiMax VR HMD. So I guess only try Vive or Rift if you want to hang on to your R9 GPU for VR purpose.

Does AMD have plans to make the R9 series compatible with the valve index?
Valve has a program to detect if your system can ran the valve index. Are you ready for Valve Index? on Steam It says the R9 series (Fury-X in my case) is compatible but it's really not (not a single person has gotten it to work correctly with the Fury-x) when I asked steam support why it says...
