Normal behavior?

I noticed something about my new kit.

Two DIMMS, let us call them D1 and D2.

My motherboard has two memory slots, A and B.

D1 in slot A, and D2 in slot B and all is good.

D2 in slot A, and D1 in slot B gets stuck trying to train, but never does.

Unusual or normal?
 
Maybe the pins are dirty or something? Did you try wiggling them around or talking sternly to them?
 
Definitely not normal, the ram should behave identical regardless of the slot it is placed in if bought as a kit.

I tend to find threatening with a hammer will sometimes work or copious amounts foul language also has some effect

seriously though maybe your IMC just doesn't like something it's seeing on D2 that it doesn't see on D1 during training leaving it it as D1 slot A D2 slot B then run memtest64 and see if there's any errors if there isn't then mark D1 with a marker pen so you never get them mixed up

Look clean, tried re-seating a couple times.

With the 'correct' DIMMs in place, ran 500% HCI mentest with no errors, with tightened timings. Did not run at XMP defaults, yet.

No, not yet, but, I have two other kits, a 3600MHz 2x8, and a 4500MHz 2x8. Both DIMMs work in either slot.

This kit is 4000MHz 2x16.

According to Thaiphoon Burner, the DIMMs are the same.


One thing I have noticed, the motherboard UEFI says it only has XMP1 profile, and no XMP2. They are XMP2 profile DIMMs, according to manufacturer.
 
My kit did the same the same thing. Slots 1 and 3, no POST if going above certain frequencies.

In fact in the manual for the board you'll probably find that there is a specif order in terms of what slots should be populated.

do other tools like cpu-z or aida64 tell ya they have 2nd xmp ?

if that´s a kit then this is baffling !!
 
Tell them you're grounded...No Mc Donalds and no Video games for a week :)

I have a similar problem on my Ryzen rig.In 1 configuration, it works fine, in the other, I get crashes quite quick.
I think I've narrowed it down to a faulty module as it crashes quite quickly with only the 1 problematic module, but I still need to run memtest on it.

Yes, both DIMMS work individually in either slot.

You may find it's not reporting what version XMP it is but rather how many profiles your dimms have, those may be XMP version 2 but only has 1 profile stored within spd chip

Why not isn't that where you are having problems when they're running in XMP mode

I never thought of that, but I believe you are correct. The UEFI shows first XMP profile (XMP1), second XMP profile (XMP2) rather than XMP 1.0 or XMP 2.0.

I thought if it passes memtest with tightened timings, surely it will pass at default. Or, is that not the proper presumption?
 
You may find it's only causing problems at its XMP speeds try 3200MHz and work you way up to rated 4000MHz sticking to the rated timings for each speed increase
