Kaspersky have found out that Ccleaner have been containing Malware, and it has been there for years.

"A single group of hackers appears responsible for supply chain hacks of CCleaner, Asus, and more, planting backdoors on millions of machines.

I downloaded the 30 day trial of kaspersky, trying to see if it find something, 2 hours left of scan. AND i found 64 infestations.

None of them had anything to do with Ccleaner.

i doubt it really effects me. I use ccleaner portable edition and block it in my firewall.

that being said, i am going to stop using it, this is second time it has been reported to have issues. and i think the first time it only affected 32 bit users

This was reported and made public about 2 years ago and the reason I don't use Ccleaner.

This is posted on line a few months ago:

This issue was isolated to two versions: Cleaner v5.33.6162 for 32-bit Windows users and CCleaner Cloud v1.07.3191 (if you are using CCleaner Cloud, the 32-bit version runs on 64-bit machines).
All builds on these version numbers were affected: Free, Professional, Slim, Portable, Business and Technician versions of CCleaner.

Just use slim version no issues.

Not suprising as once it installed Avast without my notice. After that I uninstalled Ccleaner and never installed it again.

THIS IS NOT ANOTHER CCLEANER MALWARE! Read the article!

The article clearly states the CCleaner issue happened in the past and these are NEW hacks on different companies that use code "similar" to that used against CCleaner.

Kaspersky have found out that Ccleaner have been containing Malware, and it has been there for years.
:( This is totally misrepresenting the facts and making the innocent CCleaner look bad when they have nothing to do with these latest issues. I recommend you just post a link instead of adding your own false commentary that falsely accuses the innocent! Now you have more people joining this thread who, because they didn't read the article, are attacking CCleaner for something they didn't do! :(

NO WHERE in that article does it say anything about the malicious code "still" being in CCleaner.

Let's not forget how CCleaner was infected. Piriform was just acquired by Avast and it was the Avast servers that got hacked, not Piriform's. And it was through those compromised Avast servers that malicious code was interjected into a CCleaner update - that was quickly pulled.

It was reported and fixed 2 years ago. If you are going to stop using a product because they got hacked some time in the past, you need to become a total hermit and go 100% off grid, live in a cave, and use cash only. No buying ASUS products, no Facebook, Linkedin, Sony, Hilton Hotels, Home Depot, Target, eBay, Lenovo, Uber, on and on.
that being said, i am going to stop using it, this is second time it has been reported to have issues. and i think the first time it only affected 32 bit users
No it isn't! Please read the article and NOT what the OP falsely claims. This is how fake news starts and spreads - people not doing their homework before posting and people parroting what they read without verifying if what they read is factual or not.

That article cited a past infection of CCleaner. There is nothing wrong with the current versions. Completely reading the article will help vastly with understanding the situation at hand.

It is perfectly safe now.

This is one of those times where a 'best answer' award should be handed out to a post. @Bill_Bright 's in this case.

Topic spiralling out of control in 3...2...1... otherwise

Nothing like that happens without your notice. Avast acquired Ccleaner at the time of this 2 year old infection. Since then, if Avast got installed it is because you didn’t pay attention during install. By just clicking and not de-authorizing it, you authorized the install.

I’ve already requested mods close this FUD thread.

I read the Danish version of the Ccleaner information, there no dates in that version, sorry if i mislead anybody.

im happy to be incorrect and id prefer we are safe.

I would ask the staff to step in and change the title of this thread - perhaps to reflect the facts as reported via the referenced link: "A Mysterious Hacker Group Is On a Supply Chain Hijacking Spree"

I agree. This just illustrates users must always choose the custom install option whenever installing any program, or program update in order to opt-out of any "offers" the default install option would otherwise install. While this practice of foisting other stuff on our systems during installs is common, it is particularly prevalent with free programs.

In this case, Avast is not malicious but in some cases, the foisted product may be. Or it may just be a nuisance like another toolbar, auto-updater, changed home page or changed default search engine.

I always choose the default option too because I prefer my installed programs to be installed elsewhere than the normal default install locations. In the case of CCleaner, it is installed under d:\utilities\ccleaner.

FTR, I don't like those added programs either but I accept the CCleaner developers need to feed and shelter their families too. I personally would prefer to opt-out of Avast during the program installation than to put up with banner ads and popup ads while using the program.

To follow up on my virus scan after this, i actully found 64 infections on my pc, i would never have found them without installing Kaspersky.

Total BullSh*t. It was found 2 years ago, in ONE version of their software, and it was fixed very quickly after it was found.

I hear ya.
These days it's more important to be strongly opinionated than to listen, read, understand, and think. :banghead:

Anyway, I don't really see the point with using software like this anymore, even though it sounds good on paper. On the other hand, I usually reinstall Windows once a year or so, maybe that's why..

The new thread title is still misleading. "Was" could mean yesterday. The article really has nothing to do with CCleaner. It is about "supply chain hijacking".

youre spelling it rong

Lol@ the new new thread title

I can only say, im glad i found the 64 infected files.

Terribol sorry about any incoveniences, and sadened by my own medias who wrote no dates in the article.

That seems like a waste with modern versions of Windows. That was something I did way back in W95 days. I have not found a need to reinstall W10 on any of my systems since installing it in 2015. That said, the need for a cleanup program like CCleaner (or Windows own Disk Cleanup) can become apparent after just a week or even a day of use. 1000s of cookies and temporary Internet files can be dumped on our systems after just a short time surfing the web.

Dates really have nothing to do with it. The article is not about CCleaner. Its about "supply chain attacks" bad guys use to attack companies.

Yeah, I know that I don't really have to, it's just a habit that I have.

After a week? I really don't have that impression with an SSD, but maybe back when I had a HDD. (Also, things slowing down is not my reason for reinstalling.)

Using a whitelist for cookies is an alternative, of course.

I don't think Piriform is all that up to date. Their Speccy software still says my 1080ti is 3gb.

The type of drive has nothing to do with the "number" of cookies or temp files dumped on it. IMO, if you wait until your computer slows down to clean out the clutter, you waited too long.

Huh? Speccy is not CCleaner just as my Ford F150 is not a Ford Fiesta. But also, hardware monitoring programs get their information from the hardware. No way can the program maintain a database for the 1000s and 1000s of different hardware components out there. So perhaps that is a bug in your card, or maybe a bug in Speccy when installed RAM is more than 9 (single digit). Either way, that has nothing to do with CCleaner so really the comment does not belong in this thread! :(

Did you at least report it in the Piriform forums? They cannot expect to test with every hardware device that is or has ever been on the market - so these companies need our help by reporting problems when we find them instead of just complaining about it.

Closing shop before a million guest users descend! :)
