My roommate's 8800 GT inside his Dell XPS480 (I know, I've tried converting him) has decided to go wonky and run at a constant 71-72C. I vacuumed and blew out the case this evening, going so far as to have him blow out the GPU fan. Any ideas guys?

Is it possible the cooler got jarred lately? I would try replacing the TIM on the GPU cooler.

yes replace the thermal paste

Ok, so I replaced the TIM, the GPU is now running around 62C with the case open. I'm half tempted to leave it open. Any other thoughts/ideas?

Which model 8800GT is it? I bet you have a fur coat clogging up the cooler. Remember to blow it out in the reverse direction that the stock fan blows and blow across all the fins..

GeFORCE 8800 GT. And that was the first thing we did before we replaced the TIM.

OK, what software are you using to control fan speed?

Yes, I feel it blowing in the case. I just downloaded RivaTuner to mess with fan speed. It's currently set to 73% speed. And after a driver reinstall, the temp sensor is not being detected.

My BFG 8800GT OC with a single slot cooler idles around 61-62 degrees since new. Under load it hits 100 degrees regularly. Card has been rock solid for almost three years now. Don't worry about it.

My 8800GT idles at 40 and peaks at about 48 degrees. I have an Accelero v1 with only the CM690 bottom fan blowing towards it.
