Analyst firm Susquehanna has cut AMD and NVIDIA's share price targets on the wake of confirmed reports on Bitmain's upcoming Ethereum ASIC. There's been talks about such a product for months - and some actual silicon steering as well that might support it. Susquehanna, through analyst Christopher Rolland in a note to clients Monday, cited their travels in Asia as a source of information.

This has brought confirmations that "(...) Bitmain has already developed an ASIC [application-specific integrated circuit] for mining Ethereum, and is readying the supply chain for shipments in 2Q18." And it doesn't seem Bitmain is the only company eyeing the doors of yet another extremely lucrative ASIC mining market: "While Bitmain is likely to be the largest ASIC vendor (currently 70-80% of Bitcoin mining ASICs) and the first to market with this product, we have learned of at least three other companies working on Ethereum ASICs, all at various stages of development."

Rolland believes Bitmain's specialized chip offering for Ethereum will hurt demand for PC graphics cards - as well it should, since it stands as much a status quo breaker as Bitcoin mining ASIC were at the time of their introduction. Rolland further estimated that ethereum mining-related sales accounted for about 20% of AMD's sales and 10% of NVIDIA's revenue - strong numbers that if declining, would surely impact share value and company valuation. As a result, the analyst lowered his price target for AMD shares to $7.50 from $13, representing a 29% reduction from Friday's close. Forecast for NVIDIA shares was also reduced to $200 from $215, but NVIDIA didn't see a downgraded state - it remained at neutral - while AMD was downgraded from neutral to negative. The reasoning? "NVIDIA has a stronger and more durable gaming franchise which would help it work through this potential Ethereum-related unwind," he wrote.

About time! Bring on the cheap video cards!!!

I don't believe anything will change. If it does, great. But I find it unlikely. Idiots at home will still be mining with graphic cards because they can sell them afterwards. You can only throw ASIC's in the bin once they are past their usable timeframe.

Nah they are just gonna keep pumping out stupid coins to mine on GPU. Doggo coin, Piggy coin, Coin coin, cash coin. There is no end. As long as people see this as crypto coins as way to get rich fast, the trashy coins will keep on coming.

Yes but it'll probably stop those jackasses that sit at the loading docks of the factories in China buying up pallets of cards. I'm not really worried about individual people buying graphics cards, I doubt that they have a real effect on graphics card availability, it's those people who are loading up 747s with them that I have an issue with.

Yeah but Monero is about to release code that will stop Bitmain's ASIC's from mining that crypto. The ASIC's can be, and have in the past, been pushed out by simple code. These ASIC's are great for us GPU buyers but not so for the currency's they are designed to farm. If the crypto's designer does not want an ASIC to work, it's capable of stopping it.

Wasn't ETH designed to make ASICs unfeasible?

But ETH network hash rate did not show sign of ASIC miners atm, while Monero network hash rate look very suspicious for the last 3 months until the announcement of Cryptonight ASIC existence it all start make sense. Maybe the Ethereum ASIC is not that much faster?

The price is already dropping. You already can find a GTX1080 for less than $650

Get rich quick deals always lead to folly in the end.

Still a terrible deal

Bitmain, the parasite of BTC/LTC is trying to spread its infection to Ethereum. Too bad for them that Ethereum is switching to Proof of Stake soon. These will more or less be useless if they only do Ethash when the switch to PoS occurs. Sadly, that's what Bitmain does best -- sell hardware that's only good for a few months.

And as a previous poster mentioned with Monero (CryptoNight), the programmers will likely change the ability for ASICs to mine. Us true crypto-miners use GPUs and are independent from the Mining Cartel that is Bitmain, Baikal, etc. We don't want a monopoly in crypto or in crypto-mining, otherwise we'd just use our funny money (fiat paper dollars)

It's funny how miners are butthurt over ASIC's. They are fine with running 300 graphic cards, but they get all pissy when someone can potentially do same work with 100 ASIC's. I find it ironic when those same people bitch how entitled are gamers for complaining over graphic card shortages caused by miners...

Considering MPUs (asics) are overall cheaper

Yep. Exactly this. Kinda funny seeing crypto miners that wasting power for nothing complaining ASIC miners are parasites.

hypocrites they are

It has looked a bit ropey on the profitability front for a short time already , the recent dip and difficulty increase has taken its toll, I'm not toi bothered but i am one of those who thinks it will turn around in time.
I haven't betted big or anything though.

Shit happens, we roll on , if it went bust tommorow I would have the bench off I've been waiting for.:D

your hatred for crypto is very unjustified. Once the creative destruction passes it will be nice to have an anonymous money source and ways to get away from government fiat BS. Additionally, if i recall ETH was being designed to also allow in the future the requirement to compute some scientific research. Cure coin has tripled or quadrupled F@H compute power which is amazing (Cure coin has already computed half of all historical folds on F@H network and is now ~2/3rds the total compute power). All we need is for this to advance further so coins are completely anonymous like monero and use the computing power for curing diseases.

None of these coins will probably last but its a necessary step to advance science and further de-power corrupt governments. CureCoin is at least already helping cure diseases.

people's entitlement and hatred for people using their money and making free/voluntary exchanges among people will never make sense...but statist will be statist i guess.

cool story bro....too bad its completely made up but cool story. Glad you have sheep following you too. It must be the avatar....the just gravitate to it.

Well im pretty sure Ethereum then is just gonna get forked to make it ASIC proof again like what just happened to Monero XMR. Plus reports show the ASICs aren't immensely faster or more efficient than GPUs...so there's little point in the first place.

If I want to waste away my time playing a game with my computer then that's my own damn business.

I guess I can say the same with my own time and money on mining with graphics cards.

Except you're contributing to greed which is what I consider to be one of the most destructive elements of humanity. We should be trying to evolve past greed, to become better than what we are but instead it seems that for every step forward we take two steps back.

Right. And you're totally above us all not greedy at all.

No, I don't want to be rich. Sure, it would be nice to have a little bit more money but to be rich? Nope. Money doesn't buy you happiness, it only allows you to rent it on an extremely short term basis.

As one person put it so eloquently... Mo' money Mo' problems. Notorious BIG

ASICS don't solve anything, people just inevitably buy more of them and the same power usage problems endure.

What they do acomplish however, looking back historicaly, is break the decentrilization of the network by consolidating the power in the hands of the ASIC holders. Historically speaking this has not ended well, and miners and gamers alike should both be wary. This is not an answer to either sides woes.

Except you're contributing to greed

I really don't see helping run a payment network as "contributing to greed."

that is rich! You are wasting valuable human resources having "fun". We should lock you into a cage and force you to work 18 hours a day because doing what you want is greed. You self righteous jerk!

I bet you rather just steal from someone and live on your basic income too huh?
