It's faster than a 3090ti so at 1000 or 1100 it's reasonable.
That's not how it works. By your logic and going way back, GPUs should probably cost upwards of 3 or 4k today because each generation is faster than the last. Or because Intel released the 9980XE at nearly 2k some years ago, it's reasonable that every cpu that's faster should cost more than 2k.

The new xx80 GPUs are always faster than the previous generation flagship GPUs. All that this is telling me is that the 3090 TI is way overpriced as well.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
I honestly don’t think a 4080 is worth more than $800 to me, but ultimately it will depend on where the 7900XT lands performance wise. The 4080 is likely to be faster than the XT and slower than the XTX so sadly it’ll still be a grand.
The high-end pricing will still probably suck until more mainstream options land from both AMD and Nvidia.

If the 7800XT offers 2/3rds the performance of a 7900XTX for $599, for instance* - then a $999 4080 will look like a complete rip-off and street price of the 4080 ought to adjust organically to fit whatever the market will bear.

Nvidia and AMD can set whatever MSRP they want, but after the initial surge of scalpers and fanboys have taken their turn, unsold stock sitting on shelves will be discounted by retailers until they start moving again.

* - Obviously a guess, but there are some pedantic/argumentative asshats on here so this is my disclaimer

Even if Nvidia cuts prices to match AMDs pricing structure, AMD will repsond in kind and drop its prices further. Consumers are in a good spot assuming they can wait this little price war out.

That "Get better, Nvidia" is so wrong in so many ways. Why would Nvidia get better, when the consumer spots the huge price increase and instead of saying "Good buy Nvidia, I am going with the competition", they just beg Nvidia to "Get better"? If I was Nvidia, seeing that "Get better, Nvidia", I would be putting a $1499 price tag in the RTX 5080.
I just bought an AMD gpu. I hope most others do the same until Nvidia gets the message.

If I do end up buying a card this gen, for the sake of indulging my hobby, I think it’ll be 7900XTX. Otherwise it’s time to find a new hobby.

I just hope the GPU market will adjust back to some level of sanity. I truly miss the days of good value GPUs.

The UK online stores are awash with 4080's. Quite a few have already got small discounts on them. It's unpalatable for so many so see it launch at that price. Apologists will defend the pricing but forget this is the x080, not the x080ti, or x090, or x090ti.

1k+ for the x080 card is too much for many people - clearly as is being shown by the stock availability.

I expected this would happen lol, what were they thinking giving a card that historically over the past decade had an MSRP between $500-$700 a 70% price increase, of course no one will buy it and it makes AMD look way better in comparison. Now i doubt that Nvidia will cut the MSRP all the way down to the 3080's MSRP of $700 but if they are going to give it a price cut, the new MSRP shouldn't exceed $800-$850 or something.

But at least one good thing came out of that horrible $1200 MSRP, the card was so badly priced that no one wanted to buy and it made scalpers lose thousands of $$$ after they failed to sell them on ebay and tried to return them but weren't able to hahahaha. Well deserved

Regarding the poll and prices, I wouldn't consider any 12HVPWR connector for the foreseeable future. Never had any 6/8 pins melt on me in a decade+. Even if it is a minority of cards, even if it's user error, count me out. I don't want to keep worrying about melting my computer or even burning down my house if I step out. When AMD offers something in the sub 225w range, I'll go red team since HD 7000 series.

If a company can get past the initial sticker-shock price hike, then they set themselves up for easier gouging in future iterations. Get folks saying “It’s only 100 more than last gen” when it was that last gen that saw the massive price increase. It’s a bit like power consumption. Now people seem relieved when a GPU or CPU doesn’t pump out 450W at default, but instead it is 300-350W.

Meh. Leave them double the price of the equivalent Radeon card. Fanboys will still buy them. Someone could use a new leather jacket for winter. ;)

The 12 pin connector never had any issues with 3090Tis pulling loads of power. It's only an issue with the 4090 due to the huge amount being drawn at full power over time. 600w through a tiny connector is a lot.

It's perfectly fine at lower levels, and if you step out leaving your card idle it's pulling less than 1 amp per pin. No risk at all. My 3080 was mining for over a year drawing 225w constant and the connector wasn't even slightly warm. It should never have been rated higher than 450W That's the issue.

I should have clarified. My power concerns are for heat output only. Kwh pricing near me are still normal.

My concern with the 12HVPWR is a separate issue. Sure the 4080 might not draw enough power to melt an adapter, but I'm not taking that risk.

Actually according to tests here on TPU the 3090 Ti is pulling about 100 more watts than the 4090 in gaming. I don't know what is going on with the 12 pin connectors on the 4090. Maybe they are lower quality.

We can only hope that RDNA3 is a worthy competitor to lower the prices.
that the only reason you're interested in rdna3?
"I'm all for competition so that I can buy nvidia for less" sounds better imo

Nvidia decisions have finally led me to the point of not caring about their products no matter of the price.
From me as an individual they will not see another cent.

So Nvidia slapped as many arses as possible by becoming they're own Scalper, ,, genius they out did the Aib middle men, then pissed on they're scalper middle men, and laughed so hard wee came out at they're fan base.

And continue to mock the world with brazen "And What, balls out Tude, eat it bitches".

I'm - Activating middle finger mode presently.

I voted no - it's too little, too late. Besides, I already bought a 6750 XT recently that I'm happy with. This is more of my category of products than Nvidia's halo 40-series.

that is such a bad take, the 3090 was way too expensive and now this would be reasonalbe because its not AS expensive?
you must be a dream customer for companies if this was all it took for your to think you were getting good value.....
Completely reasonable yes, at 1000/1100 it would have price parity with 7900XTX while having more dedicated features like CUDA/RTX, and being roughly the same in raster/efficiency. Everyone is just caught up in xx80 tier expectations instead of looking at where the product sits performance wise.

My 6750 XT is at least a million times faster than a GeForce 3. Should its retail price be a million times higher too?

Performance on its own doesn't mean a thing if there is no improvement in the performance/price ratio.

Also remember these cards are actually selling at MSRP, unlike the previous two generations of cards that had a "$800" price but actually cost far more than $1000.

My 6750 XT is at least a million times faster than a GeForce 3. Should its retail price be a million times higher too?
Is that what I said?

You said don't get caught up in x80 tier expectations, and look at where the product sits performance-wise. I respectfully disagree with that view. If we accepted price hikes in the name of the holy pursuit of performance through history, then graphics cards in general would be infinitely more expensive than they are right now. It's performance per dollar that needs to improve among generations, not performance itself.

Edit: TLDR: You say, don't get caught up in x80 tier expectations. I say, don't get caught up in pure performance alone.
