NVIDIA Joins Tencent E-Sports Technology Alliance as Founder Partner

NVIDIA was invited to attend the Global E-sports Summit and Tencent E-sports Annual Conference held in Hainan, Chinaon June 20th 2019. Tencent E-sports will establish E-sports technology standards in China, including technology of E-sports network, hardware, and broadcast to improve the management of the industry. As a founder member of E-sports Technology Alliance, NVIDIA is committed to constantly supporting the development of E-sports industry, boosting technological progress of the industry, and bringing better E-sports equipment to gamers.

In Tencent report, eSport market has been reached to RMB 13.8 Billion with 350 Million eSport users in China after years of development. Through the Tencent E-sports Technology Alliance, NVIDIA will work more closely with Tencent to level up competition equipment for the growing market with better PC gaming experience. GeForce and NVIDIA G-SYNC are the choice of many international top lighthouses E-sports events and professional teams to fuel up for their stable performance. NVIDIA has been supporting the professional E-sports players for years to provide them with competitive hardware solutions.

I can't believe how many people enjoy watching other people play video games. I tried it for about ten minutes and was like no... I'd rather just play myself. To each their own I guess. I guess like a super bowl level match might be ok once a year, but that's about all I can think of. 99% of games i enjoy for single player and the atmosphere/art/story... we are lonely creatures though, so I guess this was all a natural progression for some of us. personally hypocritical humans (all of us) annoy me, so I will stick to my 99% single player. more telemetry incoming to Nvidia drivers once Tencent gets a backdoor in 3 years, mark my words. also stay away from that Epic Launcher, another Ten Cent enterprise. so glad navi is coming out, long live freedom and privacy!

Meh. Watching is free. I can choose to skip ahead or stay around. I haven't watched a let's play in years, but it's still way more convenient to watch someone play via my cellphone, than it is to bring my Switch onto the light rail.

TBH, this feels like a troll post (somewhat), but I'll bite. Competitions and sports draw a lot of people, whether it's to play or watch. Just because you like single player games and don't really enjoy watching others compete, doesn't mean the OUTSTANDINGLY HUGE number of people enjoying them should just feel withdrawn and feel bad about enjoying them.

And if your natural progression remark is about saying it's a new thing, it's not. Sports have existed for millennia, just in different shape and form.

I personally watch other people play singleplayer games because I've reached a point in my life that I'm too tired to play it myself lmao. I also love watching some of the Esports leagues (R6S, Fighting games in general, etc) because you can really see what people can do with a game. Its the same as other sports.

I'm happy that Esports is growing.

Well it depends, a competitive game can be kinda cool to watch when its a tournament or something and just to see the skill people have, that one clip of Daigo during that streetfighter tournament is just amazing and I love how the crowd goes nuts.

Apart from that, watching a story heavy game being played like Alan Wake or so can be fun, its like watching a movie together really.

it's not free, you are paying with the limited amount of time you have on this Earth by watching ads, product placement depending on the streamer, etc.

the movie thing is interesting. I did watch a Uncharted all cutscenes only thing once, I enjoy those kinds of things sometimes. however I do think their are health benefits by being interactive with our entertainment rather than just sitting back and watching a tv. i think long term studies will show those who interact more like with gaming will not develop dementia as soon as their peers that are at risk for it at same levels, etc.

Instead of posting "boomer memes" im going to try my best and explain, as someone who does take interest in some eSports these days.

Its not about others playing games, its about people pulling together plays that you can't really see online playing with others.
Its about how teams work, about how scrims, compositions and preparation for matches is being done. Contrary to outside belief, there's a lot of depth in some of those eSports, much more than in some regular sports, and the people behind the teams work day and night to be able to pull it off on stage.

Some like it, some don't, like any other sport in the world.

This. I can totally get the enthusiasm from watching brilliance unfold, doesn't really matter what it is.

If you consider entertainment on a meta level, isn't one of the most important things about it that it has the ability to 'surprise us' from time to time? For sports, that doesn't just happen the first time you watch it, like with a movie, but every single match has that potential. Football is a good example. Our Dutch team is pretty popular even outside our borders not because we're champions all the time, but because we deliver some surprising talent here and there, and sometimes get really far in a competition with football that is 'fun to look at' - while other years we don't even get to participate for being utterly shit.

Back in the days, people would congregate around arcade machines to watch skillful players pull off amazing feats. This e-sport is almost the same, but it just streams the whole thing using modern means. I too, do not watch these esports, but I somehow get why people like it.

I know sports can be complex, I even enjoy going to an NFL game once in awhile. I was referring to people like my dad who watch 15 hours of NFL in one sitting and have no other hobbies, I feel like esports will end up being the same thing, eventually you get older and have to work, why would I use the limited time I have to watch DOTA 2 instead of play DOTA 2 (full disclosure I have never played DOTA 2 just using it as an example) I understand a lot of the arguments here though, so no need to respond. I know there is strategy in football, but at end of day it's childs play to magic the gathering, of which is so complex not even Google's Deepmind AI can master it, yet I have mastered it for 19 years now and won international tournaments.

I'm surprised you bundled figure skating in all of that. I barely register it in my head as a sport. it's like watching performing arts.. like a ballet. They deserve my attention. Plus, most of the girls are cute

edit: Just to add to this, the "art" in video games is in the design of them. To me anyways. At least for most games. Very few are open ended up enough to allow gracefulness and art for players. A good player is someone who has read predefined patterns and gamemaps and wins on his precision or familiarity with them. This is definitely a great skill, but I wouldn't say it's creative. I'd say the guy who made the map is the more creative one. I don't think this applies for many other real life activities. They leave a lot more room for the performer to make a unique mark and win in multiple, creative ways. And this is what is worth watching.

For the most part, the Star of the Show is the developer. It's a complete reversal from most other sports. I bet no one here even knows who James Naismith is (the inventor of basketball) or who created figure skating. The developers of these "rulesets" are lost in history, and the stars of the show are the performers. While the star of Overwatch will always be Blizzard, no matter how badass a kid in a tournament is.
