Always told myself I'm buying the next Titan if they ever launch one. But I just. I don't think I can. They don't deserve it.

The RTX 4090 only uses 128 out of 144 (88 percent) of the streaming multiprocessors (SM) on the 4 nm "AD102" silicon,
This is an error, the specific process TSMC uses for RTX 4000 is named 4N and is specific to Nvidia products. Also 4N is a 5nm process not a 4nm process. TSMC also produces N4 (correctly transposed), N4P, and N4X processes.

Wow... I mean a 4 slot cooler on the reference model is pretty insane. I mean, I am all for it if the performance jump is worth it! Although at that point, I wonder why they just don't go with a water cooler reference model to keep size down. I mean I get they want it to work in a more basic setup not needing to mount a radiator and have to deal with pump issues. However, at this size and power usage you might as well just go for broke and make it a little more manageable.

This is a halo product pushing the limits of silicon. There are dual slot 4070tis out there if you dont want a 3-4 slot monster. I certianly dont miss the days of 70dba dual slot 400w cards. Not like the rest of the slots get used anymore, because expansion cards r bad now.

Because there are still people who dont want to deal with the hassle of water cooling. Water cooling is a niche much like SLI was (except water cooling is much more popular). Water cooled stock GPUs also have a lot mroe to go wrong from a warranty standpoint, so nividia may simply not be willing to try it. There's a reason AMD stopped doing it.

I know, I figure that is what they are trying to avoid (Pump issues, leaks, etc) even though they have gotten much better. I just mean at this size (Full Quad slot) you are getting to the point you might as well consider it because you are going to need a tower that is pretty huge to support a card like this so its most likely going to have multiple radiator mount points. But I get wanting to stay on air cooling for the ease/reliability.

But you have to think about it. I mean if this is what Nvidia is going with, then this card uses a massive amount of power and this cooler is required to keep noise levels in check (Probably could run on the already massive RTX 4090 reference cooler but the fans had to spin up to keep it in check).

I think a better question is why are they pushing the power that high that they need so exotic solutions? They are way past any reasonable efficiency curve, it's fun to have the greatest halo product of all time (for now) but there's a point where is it really worth anything?

We already saw and will continue to see this with every "flagship" product, like the 4090 at 450w, drop that to 270w (-60%, no undervolt either, just the power level) and you're only loosing a measly 8% in performance

Fair point, but the difference here will be if the extra cores mean a decent performance jump. While I love overclocking to the limit it is a valid point as if all this amount to is 5-10% performance jump for nearly 500Watts in use, then that is going to be a valid question.

Also I just realized that the display outputs make the card always forced to be 4 slots. If they keep that, then that is a very dumb decision.

This GPU had been rumored for some time, the guess is that it will be released to celebrate NVIDIA's 30th anniversary in March.

To bad Titan only come in reference model. NVIDIA doesn't allow AIB versions :(. Oh well the 4090 Ti will come out sometime in the Fall and be 1-2% slower.

Why? That is garbage design, the RTX 4090 doesn't actually need close to the cooler design it has, yet alone this thing with its 5% more cores and same clocks.

The RTX 4090 cooler is way overkill, and this is ultra-overkill. Its like using a nuke to kill a fly.

The 4090 is already a lot more efficient per frame then the likes of the 3090ti, now that was a power hog.

As to why they are pushed so hard? Well, you have yields, with the price of wafers being so much higher they'll want every last piece of functional silicon you can find. Those undervolt and underclock settings are not universal, while each GPU can undervolt the level they can reach will very, just like every generation, and nvidia likely doesnt see a reason to reduce yields to lower stock usage seeing as anyone who wants to do that can do so on their own time.

There's simply no reason for them to do so. Also for dies other then the 102, any die that undervolts really well will be used for the more expensive mobile parts that operate in limited TDP spaces. That's always been true. For AD102 anything that undervolts well will end up as an A series GPU that sells for 5 figures.
Based on sales from amazon, reviews for newegg, ece the ATX form factor is still the most popular, and most modern ATX cases will take a 4090 with no problem. Even the mini ITX space has plenty of cases for 3 slot cards, genuine small ITX cases are hard to find.
But you have to think about it. I mean if this is what Nvidia is going with, then this card uses a massive amount of power and this cooler is required to keep noise levels in check (Probably could run on the already massive RTX 4090 reference cooler but the fans had to spin up to keep it in check).
NVIDIA has been overbuilding their coolers for a few years now, and frankly at this level consumers want outright performance, having a big heatsink is a literal non issue. Anyone who wants a small build with water cooling will be buying waterblocks that are far higher quality then any AIO solution that NVIDIA would ship, and more serviceable.

AIOs on GPUs are just a total waste of time.

You can fit even a phase-change cooler there and have a spare room for a squirrel!

Wow what an oinker..

So that's what a 4 slot card looks like :D
Typical 1-litre-build card. Excellent job, nvidia!

Hi,
And a black plate that is generous of nvidia

The 'law' part is really misleading.
I think he was referring to the popular leaker who goes by that name.

I think it's a cool design, and it comes with a massive advantage with that unrestricted airflow - but as with anything new it suffers from a couple of major flaws.

1. 4x HDMI/DP? Even a lowly 2060 has more.
2. No possible way to make it less than 4 slots, even with custom loop. Also not really compatible with vertical mounting either.
3. Any M.2 below it has even less airflow with a hot PCB slapped on top.
