NVIDIA Slips in GeForce GT 420 Desktop Graphics Card

When will be seeing there higher end cards. Like GTX 485,490,495??

Ya but you have to remember that 20W of that is just for the ton of memory. And at least it has 3x the cores of the last gen so performance should be surprisingly spiffy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but GT 220 has 48 cores as well. It also has 128-bit memory, as well as DDR3 support. Heck, even the TDP was just a hair above this thing at 58W... I mean, aside from DX11 support, what's really new here?

Anyway, i got a question: is this card faster than mine?

Well, yes it is, by a somewhat considerable margin. But even if nVidia releases a consumer SKU, I think you would be better off with a GTS 220 or a GTS 240/250. Also, the 2GB of RAM are pretty pointless.

Clock speeds are also higher so that is nice if it truly does consume less power. Plus there is a built in sound device that the GT220 didn't have.

What else did you really expect from a low end product that was replacing another low end product?

I mean what is to be gained by going from an HD4350 to an HD5450? The specs are virtually identical, the clock speeds don't even change. So all you get is DX11 and a die shrink that results in a 5w power reduction...

No wonder they didn't have an official announcement, they would have been overrun by hungry mobs talking about how "rad" four-twenty is...

Hungry as in they all have the munchies?

It's probably faster than my poor 8600GT, which desperately needs updating. And no, I'm not gonna spend $200 for a bleeding GPU, < $100 is more like it. :)

Classic low end card trick. Throw a shit load of memory on a low end card to make it look better in the eyes of Best Buy shoppers. When 128MB was the norm for high end cards, there were low end cards with 256MB, when 256MB became the high end norm there were 512MB low end cards, and so on. Anyone remember the 256MB FX5200s?

Exactly, this card is made to be sold in systems to mostly noobs, and if they know anything about vidcards, it's mostly that a vidcard's quality is derived from the amount of memory it has. (many of my friends believe this) So the only reason they put it in, is so big retailers can advertise the epicness of a 2GB! video card.

Wait for 1,700W power supplies first

I'm pretty sure my 1500W PSU will be able to handle 2x GTX 495s :D, it's already handling two 5970 4GBs :p Even 3x 495s should ok but i doubt there will be 6-way SLI. :p lol
