NVIDIA to Launch GeForce 9 Series in February

NVIDIA is ready for its next-generation GPU launch. According to sources at graphics card makers, the company plans to launch its GeForce 9 series GPU in February 2008. The first chip to roll out in the GeForce 9 family will be the D9E, a high-end product that adopts 65nm manufacturing. The new product will also support DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1. In addition to the D9E, NVIDIA will release a mid-range GeForce 9 family 55nm GPU named D9P in June 2008.

That just depends on the brand of card you have.

Eg, I think XFX or eVGA do it, whereas others don't.

The high end card being released first......this is the one that NVidia "say" is upto 200% faster than the 8800GTX so mefinks this one will cost the earth, be interesting to see what the competition does.

Wait, what? They are using DX10.1!!! Didn't they ridicule and put down DX10.1 as meaningless not less then a few weeks ago. I have a felling that the 9 series might disappoint some.

Might as well add the 3870 to that list, as well. Those are just as hard to find. Either way, I was able to get 3 of the 8800 GT cards without much waiting or fuss. Demand for these bargain cards, from both ATI and NVIDIA is just way too high.

Feb for the high-end (@ 65nm), June for the mid-range (@ 55nm).
I am assuming they are perfecting their 55nm fab process at the moment.

Seems odd that they would not release a high-end in June also on the 55nm process.
Maybe they are worried about killing sales on the high-end 65nm too soon. (shrug)

The first card on the new process is the one with the least risk. Makes sense. Looks like the current mid range card (8800 GT) will be around for some time to come. The new high end cards will be twice as fast, however.

It seems that you won't see a new tech as a new "macro architecture."

All the signs point that the D9E will be two GPUs on the same card (either one PCB or two)
and it will be based on the G92 wich in turn is an improved G80 architecture. So all in all it should perform either equal or a bit faster than two 8800Ultras in SLI with a big "IF". If the game scales well on SLI.

The same is going to happen with AMD R680, a two GPU card wich is based on the R600 base architechture but of course shrinked in size and with improved performance per watt. Same limitation applies here, the card will perform well if the game scales well under CrossFire otherwise its a meh and a stop gap till the true next gen architecture is ready or that these companies feel they have milked enough cash out of G80/R600 and decide to move on. Choose either one of those theories you're likely to believe in more than the other one.

Not always. If the two GPU on one card rumor about D9E is to be believed. You know how 7950GX2 needed proper SLI scaling to show its true colors.

I thought that also but I read a piece about it and it's supposed to be possible, think of it like this, if the 8800GTS 512MB is as fast as a GTX or faster, then it's actually possible, whether it will happen or not I dont know, in fact, having just got an 8800GT I dont even wanna think about it!

I hope this card still has tthe 1 billion transistors along with Free 4X anti-aliasing as previously rumored. The 4x AA woud very well alone explain the extra high percentage jump, if it turns out to be true mr Cabboose

Unless they find a way to implement Xfire/SLI at a hardware level instead of a driver level. That would be awesome, imo.

True. You would think that at least nVIDIA should have done something this time to eliminate the problems 7950GX2 had. That is if D9E is a dual GPU card. I myself truely wish that it is not and they give us the real deal, a true next gen GeForce 9.
