NVME underperforming

Hello, as the title already states, my NVME is underperfoming heavily and its affecting everything I do on my computer since its the one with Windows on it. Here are some Screenshots from different programs which ive seen people request for similar problems.

1715374010751.png

As you can see, this is about my almost exactly 1 year old Crucial P3 Plus 1TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe, both of my other drives, of which one is also an NVME and the other is a regular SSD, work just fine. I cleaned my PC today because of this issue and it got a bit better but still not nearly passable since my whole PC freezes up when I install anything larger onto this drive/it encounters something new.

My other PC Specs can be seen here:
1715374770858.png

My Motherboard is a MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus and my RAM is Corsair Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2x16GB (which could be clocked at 3200MHz, but ever since Ive had the PC it wouldnt let me because of crashes and freezes, so theyre clocked at 2667 MHz). Ive had everything in this PC for a bit longer than a year, except for my Kingston SSD, which is a bit older.

I'm thankful for any tips or info on why this could be/how to solve it.

Your P3 Plus ssd is sorely underperforming. I would RMA it. That or install crucial ssd toolbox software and enable ram for your ssd cache. See if that speeds it up. But 96% used is not good to me if nearly a new drive.

That's my mistake since one of the programs was in German but the 96% you could see on 2 of the pictures was an estimate of the programs on how good the drive is, not how much is used. You can see in the most recent picture that I have 54% of it used currently.

Nevertheless, thank you for your input, I will download the software and see if it changes anything.

Just another bad P3. There's a reason I regularly recommend against them. They're fine for dedicated storage or game drives because the reads are fast enough you're unlikely to notice the difference in loading times, but for anything more than that - OS drive, modern title that requires a PCIe 3.0 drive to stream assets - not up to task.

I had no idea they had a bad rep, would you mind recommending me a solid pcie 4.0 NVMe to replace this one with? I don't see much use in doing an RMA since the same problems will probably just come again in some time. Anything under 200$ works for me, thanks in advance!

Second the 850X, i have 2, 4 and 2TB and they are solid. Strangley my boot drive is a 500MB P5 which does not seem to have the problems the P3 does.

I had a feeling that the WD Black series are a scam since theyre marketed towards gamers and usually the industry makes those products extra expensive for the same/less value than non-gamer stuff. Nevertheless, I will check it out, thanks for the input!

I would check the A400 too, since that one likes to fail pretty often too.
I did the same test on my A400 and it performed as I would expect it to, but also I dont use it too heavily, pretty much just documents on that one. Thanks for the info though!

These are my CDM results for my 4TB P3 non-Plus, your drive is seriously underperforming. Make sure the firmware is up to date via the Crucial Storage Executive app. If it is, definitely RMA the drive.

So... you are sayin' that 2 MB/s in 4KQ1T1 would be normal for P3?

Where did I make that claim? I was merely showing that my nominally slower drive is comparatively performing way better than OP's nominally faster one. And QD1 is not a particularly realistic workload, so it neither bothers nor surprises me much that the P3 sucks at it.

Not to mention that my system setup is pretty janky: same Windows install reused over Zen 2, Zen 3, and Zen 2 Threadripper hardware (multiple different CPU and motherboard combinations) with NVMe drives connected via a PCIe card. An optimal configuration it is not, but then, that's not what I want or need it to be - so again it doesn't bother or surprise me.

the P5 is a pretty fast drive, same for MSI 470/480, XPG S70 blade,
for WD only if above SN770, which seems a bit slower than the others, and warms up a little more,
while being used least amount (trash/temp data drive).

I have a P3 Plus 1TB and after about 15GB of straight writes, it drops to under 50MB/s. Read sustained has never been over 2500 MB/s. I pulled it from my computer and now its just on my e-waste desk pile. In comparison, the 850X 1TB does sustained 600 MB/s after 100 GB of writes. Able to copy 900 GB to it pretty quick. The P3 Plus took over 6 hours and it wasn't even done when I checked in the morning.

But for $55 I can't complain too much as the 850X at the time was $110. So pretty much double the price.

Thank you for all of your inputs, I've decided to buy the SN850X the next opportunity I get, now I'm just left to wonder if I should get the 1tb or 2tb version. I was never short on storage since I'm quick to delete games I don't play much anymore but it would definitely not hurt to have in the future . Also, is it worth to get the heatsink version and would it be compatible with the onboard heatsink that's on my motherboard? (The thing left to the bottom of the RAM Slots is the heatsink where the NVME is installed).

depends, a big gpu blowing heat there will add to temps, but i would not get one with HS,
as it probably will interfere with the gpu, worst case warranty loss if removed (to sue the mb one), so just go with the one without.

For anyone interested in this problem or thats been in a similar situation as me, I suggest you keep reading.

As we could see from the various comments ive made in this forumpost, my NVME was underperforming heavily and (i thought) this caused my system in general to behave very unstable, disconnecting my wireless headset and mouse at random, having bad boots and so on. Well, the funny thing is, I had been using the USB Hub on my Monitor for my wireless peripherals since the dongles are easier to access if need to be removed/taken with me. For a change, I decided to plug them directly into my PC and disconnect the USB Hub on my monitor from my PC since it only gave me 1 extra USB Slot, and now, for whatever reason, this has fixed my problems. My NVME is performing relatively normal again and my system hasnt shown any signs of instability since.

I was ready to buy a new NVME, but it seems the problem, for whatever reason, was that the USB Hub from my monitor was causing my system to behave in a weird way. Take whatever you want from this.
