Long story short, I ditched AMD GPUs and the only thing I'm missing out on is proper screen recording. Proper as in you just set up desired bit rate, folder, and hotkey, and it works.

With OBS, however, I had to tweak registry, set up some things in the shortcut settings, and it only captures some games correctly in one mode but doesn't capture anything else in this mode so I have to switch between them every time. This thing also can't just start, it always whines about shutting down incorrectly.

So, OBS just outright sucks. What can I use instead? My needs are basic: record anything without needing to switch to a different mode every time I launch something different, and I want proper fullscreen recording (had to fight my way to make OBS record stuff fullscreen when playing games @1080p on a 4K monitor).

Sounds like something is wrong with your setup, tbh. Why would you need editing the registry at all?

As for alternatives: Shadowplay? It does require Geforce Experience (or have they migrated it to their new Nvidia App thing?) iirc.
Steam's built-in recorder is also an option, if you use it for your gaming.

Please don't be like that. After googling it's a well established fact it's something inherently wrong with OBS itself. It can't record some older titles without tweaks. It also ruins colours when recording some OpenGL games.

Lemme check that out.

I don't have Steam. Only hard copies and GOG purchases.

Upd: built-in nVidia thing works just fine. Thanks.

Won't ask moderators to close the thread just yet because maybe there are other healthy alternatives.

It don't demand an account like it did years ago. I find Nvidia's stuff to be top-notch.

I've always switched back and forth between SLOBS and OBS to learn how to customize widgets and make other cool stuff for video recording.
Toolkits like XSplit and Meld might be more your thing if OBS isn't integrating stuff properly and whining about this and that on startup.

This is what I never need. I just capture everything fullscreen. I keep it as simple as possible.

Maybe I'm too disconnected from this but it's hard to follow along with the way people use OBS. I use a variety of integrations aimed at streaming.
Every time I see OBS used in the wild it is used by YouTubers and Twitch streamers that need a variety of integrations that aren't offered elsewhere.
They're not getting it through Radeon, Twitch app and Larix are DOA, GeForce GFL, SLOBS would be perfect if it adopted OBS plugins but it won't.
My issue with screen recording is that it's not an option for content or performance. It is already a nuisance to setup VR capture, multi-camera, etc.

Now imagine having to take all of that mess and EDITING in Vegas or whatever. Sounds like a total nightmare right? Well that's another reason.
OBS is a tool for creators that prefer livestreaming over video recording but I've found it to be an excellent way to cut out the editing time entirely.
I don't know what kind of workflow you have for gaming, streaming or recording but if you ever get overwhelmed by the whole editing thing, try it.
OBS can save you from entire DAYS of editor work. It's completely insane.

I'm not a streamer or anything like that.

My use case:
0. I see something worth recording.
1. I record it.
2. I send it to people who might also like it.
3. ?????
4. FUN

I don't edit anything. The point of my recordings is they're fine as is. I don't need to insert my face, my website logo, some SFX, GFX or anything. I send it raw and enjoy.

So that's why I just want a tool that records ANYTHING without asking too many questions. And GeForce tool seems to do exactly that.

Grab Action, it works well enough. I also use Shutter Encoder (this one is free), that way I always have videos under 500MB for discord at good quality
