[Official] Meta Quest 3

Seems like quite the investment when you buy all the accessories to make the headset and controlers more comfortable, battery life better, good connection to PC etc.
Yeah, it really is an investment but I like this approach better than being held down to one strap. The Quest 3 BOM leaked and it shows they are still selling the Quest line at a loss which is good for us. I'm really blown away at how good the Quest 3 is for $499 with today's inflation.

I still maintain that they should sell The Quest 3 without the controllers and drop the price about ~$150 USD (as an option) allowing for Quest 2 owners to use their Quest 2 controllers with it (assuming it would work). That is a package that I would buy for ~$350 USD.

For what it’s worth I recently bought an AMD Radeon 7800XT (ASRock Phantom Gaming) at about ~$530 USD. That seemed like a worthwhile purchase at the time (mid October). I also bough a 40” Ultrawide (MSI MAG 401QR 3440x1440) gaming monitor for about ~$400 USD (currently on sale at about ~$360). These were worthwhile purchases for me at the moment and I’ll likely get a lot of use out of them for many years to come.

The Quest 3 just doesn’t have the same value prospects for me currently. But again if they do as suggested above I’d buy it tomorrow at ~$350 and upgrade the controllers later.

Since hell will likely freeze over before that I’ll continue to wait it out for a while.

I don't think they can drop the price 150 bucks just by removing the controllers. In the BOM that I listed above only show 33 bucks for both controllers. There is rumors of a Quest lite without controllers and using fresnal lenses with one LCD panel. Honestly, I could not go back to Fresnal lenses after using the Quest 3's pancake lenses.

I know it doesn't seem like that big of a jump from Quest 2 to Quest 3, but it is for me. The sweet spot is so much better on the Quest 3. The FOV is bigger and the resolution bump is great. I could even say that the upgrade is enough just for the faster processor and gpu, but once you add everything else it's a no brainer. The auto room scan is pretty sweet as well. I just can't say enough good things about the Quest 3.

I ordered RTX 4070 last month. Think it's good enough for PCVR on Quest 3. Postal service told me they lost the package and can't locate it. I am giving up gaming in general. Sickens me when i think back how much money I spent on hardware already, and this is icing on the cake. I am selling everything else I already have.

@Mindweaver how's that Quest 3 doing? Thinking of picking one up at end of year, unless I somehow magically find a way to fix my trackIR. It was between Quest 3 and Reverb G2 but Q3 looks to be superior and Reverb is also impossible to find these days.

It's really good the visuals are fantastic and the sweet spot is much bigger than the Quest 2's. Now with the official Steam Link app on the Quest store it so much better now with PCVR. The Pancake lenses are really great. I have a wide IPD @ 67 and on the Quest 2 it made the FOV much smaller, but now the Quest 3 has two LCD Panels and much better IPD adjustment. It's great getting the extra FOV now.

Dude, I can't wait to hear what you think about it. What sim's are you playing with your trackIR?

Fair point. It was a guess at the Q3 controller pricing on my part. The calculation was based on the Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers (Quest Pro) costing about ~$300 USD and halving it. Not very scientific, however, the BOM isn’t necessarily reflective of retail pricing. And yes I‘m aware the Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers and the Q3 controllers use different tech.

It may also be worth pointing out that the Q2 controllers are different from the Q3 controllers so their pricing might not be analogous either.

Once Meta starts selling replacement Q3 controllers due to demand I’m willing to bet it will be higher then the BOM and I’m fairly confident that the Meta Quest Touch Pro Controllers have a BOM lower then ~$300 USD

Edit:

Q2 controllers ~$75 USD:

Edit again:

It looks like, Meta sells each controller separately with left and right controller both being ~$75 USD respectively. Therefore a pair of Q2 controllers from meta will cost ~$150 USD

Edit again, again:

My Sony DualSense Edge Wireless controller isn’t worth ~$200 USD but unless you can find it on sale (maybe ~$170), that’s about what you have to pay for it

Nice nice. The Quest 2 image quality was the main reason keeping me away from an otherwise affordable headset. Looks like the Q3 fixed all that.

My only concern (with all 3 options, really) is that I have glasses.

Just playing DCS and Falcon BMS at the moment. Trying to ask around for a solution as trackIR is driving me up the wall - ie. I want the deadzone only in the green circle area but trackIR has it in the red bands (diagram courtesy of a helpful someone on discord). Those two large red "deadzones" have been getting me killed in the knife-in-the-phonebooth fights

Anything is possible.

I still think it unlikely but at least we know the retail value has some precedents with respect to pricing.

We got one for the kids, its under the tree right now. They fight over the Quest 2 all the time, so this should help.. maybe lol..

I have only tried the 2 once, some fishing game.. meh. My kids play the heck out of Gorilla Tag.

Toughest decision ever, Quest 3 or 43" 4K120 screen..........................................

Life is to short buy both.. lol

EDIT: I could not give up my Odyssy G5. I still game on monitor as well.

I currently own all of the Oculus and Meta Quest headsets (except the Pro) and the Quest 3 is by far the best of the bunch. I mean the Quest 2 is solid, but the Quest 3 is leaps better. Visually stunning in desktop mode. Every time I put this headset on I'm awed. I could never go back to the Quest 2.

@Space Lynx Oh and if you want a solid exercise VR game, buy Les Mills BodyCombat. I own all the other games you guys mentioned for getting in shape but BodyCombat is by far the best of the bunch. Buy it once and you own it. No monthly fees or anything and it's FUN! It is without a doubt the best workout VR game I have tried.

@tabascosauz I also own a 55" OLED 4K 120Hz screen. If I had to choose that or the Quest 3, I'd take the 4K screen every time. I spend way more time on my screen than I do in VR. But if you can have both, then that's the way to go!

Life is too short to buy both, but Samsung/LG/Sony/Hisense/TCL won't give me a compelling 43" option below $1500cad

My Quest 3 should be here early next week! It was the smartest choice because it should give me the better experience in DCS while not forcibly nuking my performance in all other games. I'm pretty happy with my screen size in everything else I do, it's just sims where 32" is not enough.

Great choice! The Quest 3 is great. I didn't think I would notice that much of a difference from Quest 2 to 3, but I'm glad I was wrong. The sweet spot is so much bigger these new pancake lenses are really good. I look forward to hear what you think about it.

My last experience with VR was using the Oculus Rift S more than 3 years ago and I loved the virtual reality experience. You think getting back in with a Meta Quest 3 is the best course of action ?
I initially wanted the best gear (namely the Pimax 12k/crystal, the Varjo Aero/XR4) but I figured it was better to keep it simple and get the bang for the bucks.
I'm pretty sure I will own a bigscreen beyond after that, the microoled and small weight are way too enticing.

I liked it a lot but sent it back. I'm on an openbox 43" now.

Are you actually playing enough flight sims to warrant the true displayport HMDs, or do you just want to experience what VR has to offer? Quest 3 is like, the only one that caters to both sim enthusiasts and regular people.

Which cable is guaranteed to charge Quest 3 while connected to PC? A bunch of cheap low quality on Amazon, but fine print says it is not good enough to charge Quest 3, or reviews say cable quality is not good enough.

MRTV says this cable works. I haven't tested it. I only use Quest 3 wirelessly. I use the BoboVR S3 Pro Super Strap (That's a mouth full.. lol) or as the Layman's call it just the S3. One thing to remember is that the quest 3 will stop charging if it starts to heat up. The best solution is something that has 18W+ charging with (PD) Power Delivery. Here a response from Meta support where someone is asking the same question.

@Everybody
Hey I just received the new v64 update on my Quest 3. So far it looks good. The new pass-through looks really good. I haven't tried laying down mode yet but I will. I'm really debating on buying the Apple Vision Pro strap then 3d print the adapters for my Quest 3.

Idk. Comments on that MRTV video say cable is crap. Some other cables on Amazon claim they can do 5Gbit, but reviews say 2.3-4. Those BoboVR straps never seem to be available when i check. But there are many alternatives. I wanted to buy some Wi Fi 6e PCI card. But i read windows hotspot itself is what causes problems then with adding high latency. Seems like high quality dedicated router + good headstrap is the way to go. But that raises the price considerably. Meta really dropped the ball with battery + not offering new cable for Quest 3. The one they offer was made for Q2.

Yeehaw! Early Bday present for myself. I love everything about it except the refresh rate

You might want to watch this video, although I'm not sure emulating him is a great idea.

Oh I have all the crap for the Quest 2. I just have a BoBoVR “Elite” strap on order. I just drive or fly with my VR.
