old compaq mobo

Well I have this old compaq pc the mobo is compaq 0684h and i was wondering if i installed at least 512mb of ram would that be enough to burn cds and dvds? it has a P3 @ 933 MHz

That would be plenty, my old compaq (first computer I bought myself) had a P3 667MHz with 384 MB of RAM (and Windows ME.... horrible OS) and burned many, many CDs without a problem.

so it would also be ok to burn dvd? also by upgrading from 256mb to 512mb would i need to get a bigger psu? the one it has right now its a 200W. It also has xp it had windows 98.

Nope you dont need a bigger PSU.

It should be able to burn CD's/DVD's with 256mb RAM, but 512mb RAM will make it a lot faster / smoother (in general, not just burning)

alright thank you now off to look for a stick of 256. I am looking at the cpu temp with pc wizard 2008 and it reads 70C why would that be? all i am using is firefox could it be that it would need some new past?

thats plenty fast enough to download/burn cd's/dvd's its only when you step into the realms of 266mhz and 64mb ram, simple tasks like burning dvd's/cd's and browsing the internet will become a chore, go put that old box to some use, better that than throw it out isnt it ? (oh and get some old dos games on it too, make sure its fullfilling its potential )

IMHO, 70C is way too hot, but then I leapfrogged the whole p3 era, so maybe those are ok at that temp. I'm guessing a system that old has a tremendous amount of dust, especially the cpu heatsink. I think I'd give it a good spray of compressed air, see if that helps, if not I'd remove the heatsink, blow it out, and try some new thermal paste.
