Hi,

A quick question: I have a HTPC (specs in my signature). It used to have a Core i3-2120T processor in it, but a friend of mine gave me a Core i5-3330S a couple weeks ago. The thing is, whatever I do, I just can't make it boost. It stays on its 2.7 GHz base frequency under any kind of load. It's a home theatre PC, so no big deal, I've just been wondering what might be the cause. Is the CPU faulty? Or is the MSi H61 motherboard so basic that it doesn't support boost?

Cheers.

It should boost even in that mobo. Did you tweaked the i3 and then popped in the i5? In that case you ca try to reset bios to default.
Also check for power profile

BIOS Reset / BIOS Update / Temperatures?

I didn't tweak it at all. The funny thing is, I can't even find any turbo-related setting in the BIOS. Core disabling, yes. C-states, yes. Turbo, no.

BIOS Reset / BIOS Update / Temperatures?
BIOS reset done. I've tried updating as well, with no luck (the updater didn't recognise the file downloaded from the MSi website). Temperatures are all in check.

So as I said early, could be a stupid thing like power profile in control panel... Many of my friends had this problem with newer hardware (r5 3600), and windows power plan was set to power saving

That's weird. I'll try playing with it later. I installed a fresh Windows yesterday just to check for boost behaviour, and there's still nothing with everything left on default.

Did you put fresh thermal goop on the CPU when you swapped them out?

You should try leaving C states on. If I remember well, they are needed for turbo to work. BTW it shouldn't be locked at base speed either, your EIST doesn't work and CPU clearly doesn't have C1E enabled.

Finally, I managed to flash a different BIOS file (still from the MSi webpage) onto the motherboard, and the switch for Turbo Boost, as well as adjustments for PL1 and PL2 power limits appeared.

Thank you all for the help. :) :respect:
