Old GPU working only for a little bit before going dark... Help?

Hey guys, I have an old GTX 960 that I got a long time ago, and this issue started happening a few years back. I never threw out the card, but now I have an opportunity to make a second hand PC for my nephew, and with the prices of the card I thought maybe I can get this one to work instead.

This is what happens: booting into Windows works fine. After a while, it goes blank. If I reboot right away, it'll remain blank. If I wait long enough to reboot, it'll work again.

This sounds like it overheats, but it doesn't. Fans spin. HWMonitor reports good temps (35C), until the time it goes blank.

The issue must be something else. Anyone got an idea? Thanks!

Edit: behaviour is consistent in all 3 PCs (mine, wife, and this one).

Reapply fresh thermal paste and clean the card and fan setup thoroughly, when it is working can you run games/benchmarks as normal? if so post up a screenshot of GPU-Z sensors tab when the GPU is being loaded

Since you have nothing to loose you could consider baking it but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Either core or VRM integrity issues. Didn't that card series have some sort of problem with the VRM's? (the cores were usually fine).

Get a picture of the card. Also, what make and model is it. See if msi afterburner lets you increase the voltage to the core. If so, give it some volts and see if that helps.And if that wont work cross flash the bios.

you can put it in an old toaster for 5-6 minutes... sometimes it works.

if not flip it on ebay to people who think they can repair it. (defective/for parts of course.)

edit he needs to remove all plastic and fans before he bakes it
