I have several times taken the time to reply to a thread, hit the submit amd then up comes a panel saying the thread is more than "X" days old and cannot be replied to.

Honestly, why do you make us compile a reply and then tell us we are wasting our time ?

If a thread is subject to a date expiry, then for God's sake institute an automatic CLOSED lock. Is that too much to ask ?

When I reply to a thread, I do not give a fig about the date it was raised, I do not even look at it or the last reply date, if it is open, I reply to it. Then what do I get ? Some panel saying I have wasted my time.

Please, come into the modern age and close threads which you consider too old to reply to. Not a lot to ask is it ?

YOU should NOT have to check the dates. If the Forum policy is to stop replies to a thread after a certain expiry date, then it is an elementary management and considerate procedure to automatically CLOSE the thread after such a date.

To let customers spend time compiling a reply and then bounce them with a "Too old to reply" message, is a sick joke. We are not playing a "GOTCHA" game, only trying to take part in a discussion Forum.

No matter how old a thread is, 30 years if you wish, but if it is left OPEN, then it is still live. If it is deemed CLOSED by some policy decision, then it is dead. But please Admin, CLOSE your antique rubbish if you must, but don't let posters take appreciable time constructing replies and then send them a message saying the thread cannot be replied to because of an "X" day expiry time but still shows OPEN.

As always, a pearl of wisdom from DDD.
I will certainly try it DDD, just for fun, but if it does not work, I`ll be back.

I would like to point out that old unanswered questions are as valid today as they were yesterday and there are hundreds of them in science.

Great DDD. But I would ask why we are put through this specialised and unknown deviation when simply replying to an old open thread is a logical way to resuscitate it back to life.

I will find a thread covered in cobwebs and have a go.

to prevent spambots from exploiting old threads.

DDD's reply above, plus MOST people don't go through (thats probably a time thing) old archives looking to see what they can reply to months or years after the last post, therefore the system is trying to be helpful just in case you didn't realise the thread was old, it could of course be 5 years old as well as 5 months, spambots don't have the same take on time as we do :)

DDD - It DID work. Thank you so much. I just did a test on a thread from 2006 - no problem.

Very grateful. I am no spambot or arsehole who is out for mischief. I simply spot thread which may be old and am interested in replying to it. Now I can.

Please consider my question fully answered and close this thread.
