Hello everyone, i am admittedly a bit of a newbie to the computer building space, i've put together pcs with family but never my own. i recently got a good paying tech job and im looking to make a really over the top rig since money is not an option ( within reason).Ideally i would be using 2 or 3 gpus ideally like 2 7900 XTX's or like 3 RX 6950 XT's and i'd like to be using a motherboard that takes DDR5 i bought a Lian Li Dk04f so space shouldn't be an issue but i'm still piecing together the rest. So i'm wondering the optimal way to make this work or if there's any specific motherboards that i should be looking towards

Unless you're running them separately for some reason, multi-gpu isn't supported any longer.

Unless if the software supports mgpu/crossfire it is no longer relevant to run 2 gpus a Sapphire 7900XTX Toxic is pretty over the top

@DookieNukie I'm sorry to say but SLI and Crossfire is dead and gone. The remnants still exist, but unless your doing rendering / CUDA or OpenCL workloads and not gaming, Stick to one card.

It's really hit or miss and it's only with the uber-top-tier cards. Yeah, I didn't know they continued it with the 4090!

Continued what, SLI? If so, SLI isn't available on the 4090. The software itself supports multiple cards regardless of SLI

Sorry i couldn't resist.

Serious answer, this is essentially a waste of time for gaming, there may still be a handful of games that support Multi GPU in which case you want all 3 to have the most bandwidth possible, and ideally all the same I believe, 3x pci-e 16x slots at 16x speed, which is a tall order on most chipsets, you might get 3x 8x speed or 3x 4x speed.

If it's for production workloads, then they can all be mismatched in terms of slot speeds, the card you want to game on, use the fastest slot and the strongest card, and install the others as you see fit with as many lanes as you can give them. I don't really have much experience with production work on video cards however so perhaps they need very little pci-e bandwidth.

He would need a Threadripper to have max pcie 16 bandwidth

How ever if you want some help in the games that support mGPU features I can help you.
There maybe only 1 game that supports 3 cards though I haven't confrimed this. Metro Exodus < not "the enhanced edition" the reason for this is that it has PhysX on it, that should be able to use GPU physX since it uses a lot of older DX11 code. RX 400-500 seems to support DX12 mGPU on them.

As for the games that can support mGPU

I don't use DRM games so My list is made by coloring them for the purpose of differentiating them for each other.

Normal found on G.O.G
Red Not confirmed to support mGPU
purple behind a DRM platform
Green behind a DRM but Confrimed to support mGPU
underlined games I have that I can check eventually
Blue exclusively Dx12
Bolded Raytracing games
??? = unknow to support, but sometimes shown to support mGPU in videos or reviews.

1. Ashes of the Singularity Nitrous engine Explicit mGPU use Game engine does it all
2. Battlefield I (Sli & crossfire support) Frostbite3
3. Battlefield V (Crossfire support) Frostbite3
4. Chasm: The Rift (2022) (VulKan) ???
5. Civilization VI (SLI maybe turing only for DX12) Gamebryo engine
6. Cyberpunk 2077 ??? exclusively Dx12
7. Deiliver use the Moon (SLI supported) Unreal 4 engine

The OP isn't getting hate here. This site is called TechPowerUp for a reason. It's Tech. Gaming is just one aspect of Tech.

No this is gamer forum anymore look at all the games in the review they all have to have a huge amount of players playing them to even be in the reviews here; regaurdless of how well the game engine works.
Even if it's a crappy coded game, but everyone plays it's, it's on in the review.
If this were an enthuiast forum they would care more about how well the game works with the system & how even the load can be put across the entire system, or how well it brings a system with high end GPU's & cpu's to their knees.

Should a Tech Site just ignore the hundreds of millions of gamers out there?

I think you should leave some feedback to @W1zzard with your concerns.

Gaming....... Don't buy 3 GPUs.

Are going to do other things with this proposed rig?
I was not expecting so many replies but it’s actually not meant for like gaming primarily, I really only play rts games tbh so it’s not for that. I do 3D animation in cinema4d and octane render engines for fun an I also code

To be fair I really wouldn’t consider this hate it’s more informative if you go on Reddit and ask a question with an answer you weren’t aware of the responses would be much harsher. But I do appreciate the feedback the rig would probably not prioritize gaming as much as 3D rendering in Cinema4D with Octane Render engine and like hdr mapping stuff

Well there's only one real top dog GPU at the moment, the RTX 4090.

I've also been reading Unrealengine fourms & rendering forums too. Developers can't get mutliple RTX 6000 or RTX 4090 to combine in some Render engines. it seems like Nvidia is locking out Nvlink on Ada lovelace. Many of them are really kind of mad about it. They were even have trouble with CUDA software that supports muliple cards on it, with Ada lovelace. They could only get one card to work with it.

So tbh I’d consider the 4090 If it weren’t for the price gouging for one. $1500 fine, 2.5-3k? A 100% markup big nope from me. Beyond that the whole 12 pin melting thing concerns me a bit I know the failure rates not crazy high and it’s primarily from one manufacturers factory but the idea of buying one when they don’t have any active recalls on it bothers me

Thaaats upsetting I really rather not pay for a render farm on big projects either rock an hard place I guess
