optimize your Hard-Disk?

I found this tutorial on another site and wanted to know if its a good Idea to do? and exactly what does it do? I have WindowsXP pro and its a fairly new install.

This procedure should work on all Windows OS but we tested her on Windows XP and Windows 98. Now to optimize you Hard-Disk fallow next steps:

1. Run Notepad and open file System.ini which can be found in Windows directory,
2. When you opened this file under [boot] section change "shell=explorer.exe" into "shell=defrag.exe",
3. Restart you computer,
4. When Windows is loaded, only Disk Defragmenter will run,
5. Optimize HD and restart your computer again,
6. Before windows start to loading press F8 on your keyboard,
7. Choose "Command Prompt Only" and type "edit system.ini" (without quotation marks) and under [boot] section change "shell=defrag.exe" into "shell=explorer.exe"
8. Restart you computer once again,
9. Now your HD is perfectly optimize.

I get it, instead of starting explorer, it starts defrag... it only defrags like you would but faster cause no other processes are running.

well, I guess it wouldnt really do me much good since this is a recent install of XP, I guess it would be ok for someone who hasnt defraged in a while.

Cheers might try that. All though will not be for a while as i use multi boot OS so i defrag one from the other OS install with Ultimate Defrag which allows me to put the files were i want them.

its a simple way of offline defragging your hdd though the reverting back to explorer.exe is the part where i die lol

This is still not going to defrag the MFT or paging file if they are fragmented, if I am not wrong. For defragging the MFT as well as some other system files you'll need a commercial defrag utility such as Diskeeper.

Sounds like complete silliness to me. It basically loads defrag instead of explorer. You can manually shut down explorer instead. Apart from that, you're probably better off using some 3rd party defragger that can run before windows is booted, perfectdisk for example does this.

btw, people have claimed to run Windows without GUI this way by replacing the shell with cmd.exe, however the GUI still runs on the background together with everything else.

Indeed Diskeeper and Ultimate Defrag does MFT file.
