Overclocking, worth the perf gain?

Should I get and unlocked CPU?

Hardware is already so fast that overclocking really isn't needed anymore, I think we do it now-a-days for the fun of it. Also overclocking isn't what it used to be, now anyone can do it if they can navigate a BIOS. I think its up to software now to catch up and take advantage of how fast our hardware is today.

Hell, I had this 4770k at stock for months when I got it, I just couldn't find much of a reason to overclock it. Everything ran as fast as I needed it too already.

Even on a 120hz monitor? And might not stay like this for a long time. Do you think it could be useful in the futur?

I overclock, but do so in a balanced manner, not going for the highest clock speeds. I don't like overclocking to the point where the voltage has to be substantially increased for minimal gains, but one can usually see benefits even from milder overclocking.

You will likely need 2 GPUs for that (Especially at 1440p. and even some games at 1080p). Overclocking only increases performance so much, until you can't anymore, and then need more performance in the future so you will need to upgrade anyways.

Thanks for your answers guys. I'm really hesitating.

Z97's board also have the advantage of supporting SLI/CFX. What do you guys think of this option?

I have a locked CPU, i7-4770. I have an i5-3570k as well in my build where all my old stuff gets reused. TBH the i5 when OCed and when not OCed there isn't any noticeable difference. I've only got mine OCed because I can. If it were locked, I don't think I'd be missing out on anything. Overclocking a graphics card on the other hand is a whole different kettle of fish. Overclocking those REALLY helps out games, although it must be said that even graphics cards these days are so fast there isn't much need to OC. So personally I'd say spend a little less on your CPU and a little more on your GPU. :)

I'd get a Z97 if I were you in case you want to go dual graphics card setup in the future and if you do choose to get a k-chip, you can OC it. Although apparently I think it's ASRock and Asus have BIOS updates allowing overclocking on H97 but could be wrong.

The whole idea of overclocking is seeing how far you can get away with before failure.

Anything out now doesn't really need to be OC'd. If you have bottom of the barrel parts then OC'ing makes a world of difference.

??? It is 5:20pm over here haha. I'm still at work.

Games like BF4, BF3, bad Company 2, SimCity, CoD, GTAIV, SRIV, Assetto Corsa, World in Conflict, CoH2, SC2 so on.

Overclocking can be useful I've found for bragging rights though :p

The answer to your question (IMO) is "no"; however it is still fun to push your CPU/GPU to their limits to see what they what they can do:)

Oh lol I thought you lived in the USA lol. It was 3AM when I type this message haha.

As for the game you play, I'm not but I think the only that is CPU-intensive is Starcraft. Have you tried to play to MMO's or other more CPU-intensive game? Because I think they benefit more from overclocking than other games.

Here for example I've found a benchmark of ARMA III: http://www.techspot.com/review/712-arma-3-benchmarks/page5.html

When sifting from 3.5 from 4.5 there is a 10 fps increase. But those number don't really mean anything to me since I'm new in hardware... What do you guys think of an increase like that one?
Do you have other benchmarks like this one?

Yeah it looks pretty cool. Plus a water loop would look awesome in my rig.

Almost 3AM here right now.

It really depends on the game. CPU bound games will definitely see an increase like you're saying but most of the time in most games the difference will be negligible (like you can see in the BF4 cpu review link I put up below). http://www.techspot.com/review/734-battlefield-4-benchmarks/page6.html

Hahaha, so i'm indeed not the only one who is insomniac.
From what I've heard, BF4 works harder on the GPU but I may be wrong. MMo's also seem to benefit a lot from overclocking. Look at that: http://www.reddit.com/r/elderscroll.../just_got_an_extra_25_fps_overclocking_my_i5/

Is it possible it's just a random case?

Sometimes you must oc... my i7 950 at 3.06Ghz isn't going to cut it, but at 4Ghz it's not too bad. It's been running at that speed for years. Good cpus have headroom, they must be oced! 4.5Ghz is the sweet spot now, so look for a cpu that can do that. I oc my dam samsung tablet! 1.4Ghz to 1.6Ghz.... not much but at least it's an oc!

Not hating on anything. Just pointing out that you get worse processing power for what you get with AMD. And the refurb GPU is sort of a crapshoot.

Yes 4790K and something like Asus Ranger VII or Hero VII. Both together still under 500$.

Next-gen games are going 8thread, you will benefit from it more then with 4core 4 thread.

Good point. I assume a smiley sort of replaces a full stop, because it would otherwise look weird. I am not sure about parentheses (it wasn't exactly a standalone sentence...)
