This is my first thread here at tech power up so please dont flame me :). i'm a friend of JC316, hes away and told me that this place is great for getting computer hardware related problem help, so im going to give this a try. okay, so i'm planning getting a scythe infinity cpu cooler (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185027) and mount 4 more fans, like this: http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/019/scy12fc-detail.html,, the third picture in the row of three and the picture at the bottom, both represent the scythe infinity quad-fan mounted. however, scythe also gives a warning: *Caution: Due to the total weight being very high for quad fan mounting, we strongly advise you to mount and secure the heatsink to avoid damaging your motherboard/CPU. For Quad fan mounting, please arrange this at your own risk (ex. spreading weight by using wires to sling the CPU cooler). i'm planning on mounting this cooler on my intel c2d e4300 allendale, stock speed 1.8, hoping i can OC it to 3.0 on my evga 680i sli A1 mobo. also i plan on mounting 4 of these: http://www.thermaltake.com/dcfans/ComboCool/a2329/a2329.htm. on the cooler, i'll replace the stock cooler fan as well since the thermaltake fan beats it in performance. i need to know how to make it so that my cooler wont crush my processor, and also on the side, what fan positions would you recommend? i was thinking about making all 4 intake? Yes, i'm a noob at OCing, so sorry if this is a really stupid question...

With case fand you want a 1:1 ratio ideally. If not then a ratio biased towards expelling air- and not the other way round. Otherwise heat gets retained in the case. Whereas a biased outtake airflow (while not being ideal) can suck in air through holes in the case automatically(if inefficently) but more importantly blow the hot air out. Remember simple this simeple priciple- hot air rises; so have the exhaust fans near the top and back of the case. Intakes at the bottom and front.

Hope that helped answer a bit of your question.

i'm not convinced putting four fans on the heatsink is the best use of your money. and your cpu runs pretty cool, and even with the up'ed voltage, i think one fan placed on the side of the heatsink fancing the front of the case, pushing air towards the back of the case, is good enough.

but if you really want to put four fans, the way onetruewill described would also be the way i recommend.

im not really even sure if im going to do 4 fans, cause i suppose my heatsink will get pretty heavy, and yes i supposs onetruewill, you're right. what i need is my e4300 allendale go up to 3.0-3.5 and be cool, cause i need it running oced 24/7 with 50%+ workload, so im not even sure about a good heatsink, people recommended the scythe infinity to me, i saw the oppurtunity to extreme out the infinity with 4 fans, but then i dont want to take the chance of crushing my core,. so i'll even take suggestions for heatsinks if you guys know some great heatsinks that'll top my scythe. thanks!

oh, and if you want to know my case airflow(case is NXZT's Lexz, i have vertical airflow as well as horizontal. i have a 80mm intake fan on the bottom of my case, and a 80mm exhaust on the top of my case directly over the bottom one. and then i have a 120mm fan on my side panel window, a 120mm intake fan in the front, and then a 120mm exhaust.

umm, kwchange, can you give me an example of the results achieved with this cooler? like if you personally use it can you tell me your temps and all?

ahh i haven't used it, lol. but i can direct you to reviews. (google this: Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme reviews) the anandtech one is especially impressive

np, tuniq tower is fairly close. oh and btw, most good heatsinks are above the specs intel and amd provide for their motherboards (i think it's around 300 grams, the stock intel cooler comes in at around 250). because of this...if you go to lan games alot, id recommend finding some way to make sure it doesn't fall off, and when you move your computer (aka ship it) it would be smart to take the whole thing off. just throwing this out there in case you're a laner or have to move some time soon.

1) The scythe infinity is a great HS
2) 4 fans is way overkill, if anything have one intake to blow across fins + one exhaust to pull
3) I can't imagine even 4 fans adding a significant amount of weight as to worry about damaging your cpu...it's so heavy to begin with that the added fan weights wouldn't make much of a difference...
4) the thermal conductivity of a HS and ambient temps play a much larger role in cooling your cpu than going overkill with 4 fans mounted, 1 is fine

yeah, i figured out about the weight and overkill fans, so its more like dual scythe infinity vs. thermalright tower, though im planning getting the tower, what do you say?
