PC hardware emergency! (unexpected!) (also unprecedented!)

What was the CPU that was installed lately on the B450 Tomahawk if I may ask? And was it oced?

The Ryzen 7 3700X which hardly uses power, it wasn't even OC'ed! (Since June 9, 2020)
(When I got it on January 3, 2020, before the coronavirus became a global pandemic, at least officially, it was a Ryzen 3 3200G)

Really? Before B550?! Sounds like even during the B450 era, they didn't learn from the 970 era! (for the thermal pads)

It was running like something I never ever saw before!
i don't know before B550 for AMD but i had issues with MSI on an Intel Z77A-GD65 Gaming board which were also with the Mosfets and coils, my current MAG B550 Tomahawk is running totally fine tho, the VRM stage cooling is huge on a board of that category :D (well if she break, i hope she only take herself out ... since i paid her 99chf instead of 149chf buying a new mobo will not hurt as much as the Z77 board )

The Linux build should get an ASRock X570 Steel Legend on the 8th.

Good news, it looks like my Ryzen 7 3700X wasn't killed and my Radeon RX 6600 XT is working, but haven't tried 3D. Will run other stuff to see if the motherboard is fine or not.

Looks like it was only the MSI B450 Tomahawk motherboard being as dead as a fly!

Update: Looking good with repeated Cinebench R23 runs and looking good with Unigine Superposition 1080p Extreme.

MSI had the worst that existed, but then to fix their reputation had a few boards with top tier VRM's

They still sell the garbage ones, but it's a way to make people read a review on their good boards, then buy their cheaper garbage

All of those pads will leak silicone oil when they break down, usually from heat. It is non-conductive, but we did have problems with it picking up flux off the boards, which absorbed humidity and became a little conductive; in a circuit with 5M ohm resistors, it was enough to short a 500V power supply. I doubt it's conductive enough to affect a digital circuit at 1.8V.

I suspect the +12V input was shorted.

Oh my god they killed the computer you bastards.

Ps. I just had to say that I was once a big watcher of south park and I was making a play on the killed kenny line.

Lucky for you, B450 boards are still readily available (for now) and dirt cheap. CPUs are very resilient (when not mistreated by overvolting), so I wouldn't expect your 3700X or videocard to be damaged.

Next time don't buy MSI.
