Okay so I have
Asus Hero Alpha
i7 6700k
GTX 1070

So when I made this PC, I intentionally installed the gpu in PCI x8 slot (just because it did not cover my ROG LED which in case of x16 did)

So Just for the sake of curiosity, I removed the card from x8 and installed it to x16 slot and now my fps droped
form 120 fps to 60 fps in battlefield 1. Not only that but even GPUz Render Test dropped fps from 400 to 90-100!!

I don't know whats wrong, If I install it back to x8 slot then it runs correctly. But in GPUz I noticed that bandwidth, Pixel Fillrate does increase a bit in case of x16.

Oh and I did check the gpu usage in x16 mode and it was 99% at the time of render test.

The Photo that I have attached is of x16

The card is only running at PCI-E x1 1.1, that is the problem. The 1.1 will likely change to 3.0 when you put load on the card, but the x1 won't. For some reason the card is downgrading to x1 in the PCI-E x16 slot.

Make sure the card is fully seated in the slot, a lot of times just reseating the card can fix this.

Reseating the CPU can sometimes help as well since the those PCI-E pins end up going through the CPU socket and into the CPU. Over-tightening a CPU cooler can do something like this.

try to tap that " ? " ... and do start render test

Well my card did tun in 30. when I did the Render Test, So that is not the case.
And I installed my card 2-3 times so its sitting correctly in there

Tried it but still no luck :(

The 1.1 to 3.0 isn't the problem. It is that it is only run at PCI-E x1 instead of x16.

notice the highlighted part

I am not a pro but since it (the PCIe x16) remained unused for long(?) time, could be some dust have went inside it thus prevent full contact to the card?

its possible, however i might suggest a GPU Driver Reinstall as well

I wonder if any BIOS settings were changed before and the OP forgot about it.

I would try this in order, uninstall drivers & use a driver cleaner to remove left over drivers, remove the card, reset CMOS, reboot once, shut PC down after POST, reinstall the card in x16 slot, and finally do the (pre-cleaned) Driver install.

I didnt make any changes in bios otherthan overclocking, but i tried resetting it back to factory setting, will try the CMOS method tho.

pushing the top button (1) on the io panel will reset the bios to factory.

Ignoring the horrid elephant in the thread.

Did the card stay in 1.1 during games or did it go to 3.0? Sorry if I missed if you answered that already.

Your mobo - https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO-ALPHA/specifications/

has -

"Expansion Slots
2 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8, +gray)
1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x4 mode, +black)
3 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x1"

You said " I intentionally installed the gpu in PCI x8 slot" - there is none. You will only have 2 x8 slots with 2 cards in them.

Usually the first slot only will, with one card, be x16. But the wording doesn't say that. You have two slots that will (most likely) be x16 with just one card in it.
Would both of them result in "cover my ROG LED" if you used them? If not, try the x16 slot that won't.

when you inserted the card in the top pcie 16 slot did it click in place?

also what does the gpu info page in the bios say
page 130 of the manual

But when I installed my card into second PCIe Slot, It runs at x8 so I guess My mobo only has 1 pcie x16 slot

@Noob Makes PC Try not to multipost. You can quote more than one person in a single post. Double/triple posting is against forum rules.

Now when you say it runs at 3.0, that's what it should do. Go to 1.1 on idle and 3.0 under load.

So looks like your choice is x16 or led ROG logo with x8.

Sorry about that,

Anyways, The problem is not that what you understood, My card is running at x1 rather than at x16
Take a look at the photo attached.

Exactly!
