hey, how can you overclock a Pentium M processor? I don't know of any program that lets you. It's M so it's for laptops, so I don't know the motherboard. Thanks

AMDCam .. if it's for a laptop you'd need the service manual to identify the mobo or crack open the case, but what you need is the PLL chip identified ... PM chips oc pretty good .. laptops are limited though ...

Okay thanks man. I hear that Pentium M's overclock to 2.5ghz easy, and they're all the same specs (1mb L2 Cache, 533mhz fsb, same series- 7#0), so I'm wondering if I should get a laptop with a 1.6ghz Pentium M or go for the 1.73ghz (+$100), 1.86ghz (+$200), or 2.0ghz (+$400). If I can just find a program to overclock it, and they're all the exact same processor with higher clocks, then I could save $400 and hit 2ghz easy. Plus, if I choose any of those I hope they all hit 2.5ghz, which is another reason to get the cheap one.

Another factor is gaming, and from my experience processors don't do much for gaming. I mean I get maybe 10 extra points from a 200mhz overclock on my Athlon XP, so I would think even if I couldn't overclock it it really doesn't matter for gaming does it? Also, the less clock the more battery life, so the cheapest one seems smartest to me (the 1.6ghz one). Thanks guys

AMD .. Not a guarantee ocing to 2.5GHz. I just tested an Aopen i915pMm native Dothan board and I wasn't able to oc it past 2.2Ghz even using the wire trick to up the voltage to 1.55v. The same CPU does 2.7GHz on the ASUS adapter but the BIOS would lock if I tried to go past 157FSB, which I thought was because of no PCI lock and no settings at all for PCI or PCI-E in the BIOS. So given that scenario and laptops in general given heat as one issue usually suffer by them, you'll need to find an app to oc it which I wouldn't say is a given 2.5GHz oc .... Dothan’s are great gaming CPUs here .... I'd go at least with the 750 at 1.86GHz

Okay but I mean I'm wondering if processors even help gaming at all. I mean if I get the stock 1.86 am I gonna see a bit of difference with my games? From my experience it's a no, but it doesn't make sense when processors are built for gaming like the FX models. By the way, it's Ghz, not mhz, you accidentally (I hope) put that. I don't mind the overclock, I really don't have a choice on different models (like Pentium D's or Turion's) but just wondering how far it could overclock. Plus heating with laptops, I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's hard to cool them, but when they're well ventilated they're great. The 9300 actually has that as a feature, a great cooling design on it. Plus, you put a laptop on top of an AC vent (in a house) and watch that thing overclock.

Now the only question I've still got is where can I find an overclocking program? I guess I'll wait until I get the laptop to see my motherboard specs. Just hoping that they're all the same processor, just with different stock speeds (like they just detuned the ones with lower speed).

Yeah ... I corrected it, long day as usual... the heat issue with laptops may just be me or the manufactor that I have more commonly been exposed too... do get quite warm underneath ... I just didn't want you to expect that it would automatically hit 2.5ghz and make your purchase on that ...

I would start with Systool ... allows you to change the CPU multi and voltage in the program. Of course if you have a listed motherboard or PLL. In your case the motherboard is not going to be listed but you give W1zz the PLL datasheet .... he could more than likely add it ...
