Physx is now open source,. Can Amd now effect compatibility??

General question, I can't see why not personally but with my sun shiney disposition i might be wrong.

I hope they will. That will mean more developers will go for physx and gpu will run it instead of cpu, meaning less load on cpu, and less stuttering...I might end up runing my pentium rig for years to come...
 
I think it's more of a question can AMD deploy it in a way that is useful. Answer: I doubt it.

If there is any future for hardware accelerated PhsyX, I think it will have to come from the open source community (perhaps a Vulkan extension?). I can't see AMD committing any resources to it when NVIDIA can't be bothered to either.

PhysX was mostly used for particle physics and most engines had in-house GPU accelerated implementations anyway.

Has there been any notable implementations of physX driven effects in any recent games? If i dont consider borderlands or metro, i am lost to think of another title where a notable difference is seenwhen "advanced" physX is enabled.

Arkham Knight, Everspace, Fallout 4 has bullet collision debris, Life is Strange, are ones since 2015. Not a lot. A lot of games used it though 2013, then it fell off.
 
Open source is just a stick to beat things with, when things become open source they claim they don't care anyway, how droll.
 
PhysX is one of those things ya don't notice till ya turn it off. For me it's akin to having a car in NY with air conditioning. I remember my son wouldn't turn on the AC "to save gas" in his senior HS year. Then he spent a day stuck in rush hour when "picking a friend up at the air port after boot camp" .... in August. Ever since if the temps break 76F, that AC is on. I can also compare it to moving to 144 Hz AuOptonics IPS screens .... 1. After 1st 2 hours, yeah it was nice 2. Played an hour on wide curved 3440 screen, liked the immersion 3. Played on the AuOptonics panel again .... OMG, .... everything else is horrible.

The thing is, I have no knowledge of any subsequent analyses regarding DX development, gameing engine improvements or whatever which addresses any substitute technologies which can provide the same effects. I don't have the time to play many games, these days.

Havok, intel own that , farcry4 is what got me thinking, i fitted a gtx560 to dual screen cheat physx on it but it was Doa(the Gtx) my mate killed it i was being optimistic.

It's probably pointless but I damn sure would mess with it.

yea, pretty scarce. Even when it does show up in a game, its a after thought addition at best. I recall Metro had some pretty sizable additions, cloth, smoke, etc, and iirc borderlands did too.

Warframe has some pretty neat particle fx too.

Honestly ,I had my CPU mistakenly set to render physX, I was playing through the metro series ,and I noticed no impact in performance. I think it's gotten to the point where a CPU can render physX fairly easily. Maybe developers have stopped showing an interest in including it into their titles, who knows
 
So, do we uninstall it?

PhysX, the subject of the thread, going open source and its apparent irrelevance by the many comments here: it seems the inference is that it is no longer used and modern hardware overcomes the need for it due to high compute power from modern GPU's.

Unless you are running an older computer and legacy games it's unneeded?
When you install the Nvidia drivers, should you opt out of this component?
 
What's funny is back in ooooooooolllllllllllllldddddddd days, people would mod drivers to get the PhsyX to run on a NV GPU and the actual 3D Rendering on a AMD/ATI card

Unless if you have games that need it, you should remove it, no sense in having a useless program/api if it is not used by you.

Didn't need mod drivers to do that. That was NVIDIA's intent from the moment they considered buying out Ageia.
