I'm a complete noob when it comes to servers so help would be greatly appreciated!
My office has a Dell Poweredge T310 with only 2x2GB DDR3-1333MHz,
Fortunately it has a quad core Xeon so that should be fine for a while.
I'll be updating it from Windows Server 2003 and my IT guy recommended upgrading the ram.
The motherboard supports up to 32gb so I figured I might as well get 4x8gb kit but I might settle with 4x4gb
My main issue is finding single rank modules. I bought a kit on newegg which didn't work and then found out it was because it was 2Rx4 (I think this is dual rank?)
Anyway, please help me find a 4x4 or 4x8 kit that will work!
Thanks team :)

Which kit did you buy? After taking a look at the Xeon 3400 series spec sheet I don't believe the issue was from the ranking. It would come into play if you were trying to fill all 6 slots on that server (they all couldn't be quad-rank) but 4 dual-rank sticks is valid over the two channels.

I like Crucials recommendation for the T310: a 2 x 8GB ECC/Registered kit. If you ever feel like 16GB is tight then get a second kit. Won't have to do anything special since you're already using registered memory, which that platform needs to hit 32GB.

Problem solved! lol I had purchased this kit:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WFCAQLO/?tag=tec06d-20
which clearly states that it is single rank, however the kit that I received was dual rank.
I called A-tech support and they are going to send me the correct single rank kit which will hopefully solve the problem.
$99 for 32gbs is a steal
thanks for the efforts!

chapter 7:
The following DIMMs are supported:
• Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 1GB DIMM, Single Rank
• Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 1GB DIMM, Single Rank
• Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
• Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
• Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 4GB DIMM, Dual Rank
• Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 4GB DIMM, Dual Rank
• Registered, DDR3 1066 1GB DIMM, Single Rank
• Registered, DDR3 1333 1GB DIMM, Single Rank
• Registered, DDR3 1066 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
• Registered, DDR3 1333 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
• Registered, DDR3 1066 4GB DIMM, Quad Rank
• Registered, DDR3 1066 8GB DIMM, Quad Rank

So, dual-rank modules are fine. You just need to read further for proper ram configuration/installation.
I'd go with some cheap 4x4 kit of unregistered DDR3-1333 and call it a day. If you are buying a new kit - pay attention to voltages (like accidentally buying LPDDR3).
