Plextor (www.plextor.com), leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance digital media and storage equipment, gave a sneak preview of the upcoming M6 Drive and M.2 form factor SSD solutions at the IFA show in Berlin.

    Plextor M6 Series
The M6 is the anticipated successor to the Plextor M5 Series. The M6 is a 2,5", 5 mm solid state drive for the consumer market and is scheduled to come in the following versions: a version for the high performance segment, the Pro version; and a version to cater the needs of average computer users, the S version. The M6 features the next generation of Plextor's proprietary TrueSpeed technology that works in tandem with the Marvell 88SS9187 controller for enhanced performance and reliability.

The new drive will also feature the latest generation of NAND flash from Toshiba: A19 Toggle NAND, which is the smallest and fastest performing MLC available. On top, the M6 is flatter than its predecessor featuring an ultra-slim 5 mm casing. The full performance specifications for the M6 series and release schedule are not finalized yet and will be announced at a later stage.

    Plextor M.2 Form Factor SSD
Following the new Ultrabook specifications by Intel, Plextor also displayed new M.2 (also known as New Generation Form Factor or NGFF) SSD solutions. Using a PCIe interface, the Plextor M.2 will overcome the performance bottlenecks of SATA. The new M.2 series has not got a finalized name yet, but the samples shown had lengths of 60 mm and 80 mm. The M.2 series, like all other SSD solutions by Plextor, shall be paired to a controller from Marvell and NAND flash from Toshiba. The controller used will be Marvell 88SS9183 and NAND flash will be Toshiba 19 nm TOGGLE. Plextor M.2 series is likely to come in following capacities and with following performance specifications:

PCIe SSDs are definitely the future and they eliminate the SATA port bottleneck. The Plextor M6 series should do well if it's an improvement over the M5 and priced competitively. It's unforunate that most existing laptops can't use the PCIe SSDs but next gen models will.
