My internet acquaintence was talking about buying a really high end laptop and I'd suggested he could get a ton more bang for the buck with a desktop.

I'm a bit behind on the current chipsets.

So essentially I'm just looking for opinions on parts. He intends to own this for a long time so something good but no 1k cpu's. Maybe keep the 2k price range in mind.

I know we'll probably need a micro atx board and the psu's gotta be modular but I've not ever put one of these together so hoping for some insight. Thanks.

ah i've always wanted to build one of these :) let me do some looking around. and does this include monitor, speakers, etc. or just the pc itself?

maybe i should ask... what games will he plan to run and at what resolution does he usually game in? how much storage does he want?

haha i just picked out a 560ti... a 2nd might fit but dunno how well it'll be able to breath in the box, that's gonna be the biggest issue. i had picked a 2500k but the 2600k will work too lol

Power Supply

RAM

Motherboard

CPU or 2600K

that's what i got so far, but trying to find a pair of 560's that can have some breathing room. the 2nd wont matter as much since it'll be next to the side vent, but the 1st will need some slimmer cooler so it can actually get some air

the cards will end of this close to each other...

I think i found our answer... 2 of these instead. PowerColor AX6850 1GBD5-I2DH Radeon HD 6850 1GB 25...

placing another 60mm fan at the top right should catch most of the hot air from the gpus

Hmm. I wonder if we couldn't go with this if he took a single card solution.
CORSAIR CWCH60 Hydro Series H60 High Performance L...

Even with a gtx 590 he's spending less than a laptop, will have the option to upgrade his parts and shouldn't have any game tax his system for a very long time. Gotta find out how long the gtx 580 and 590 are, I think a single card solution would probably be best. Lighter to lug around too.

2k? jeez, if he wants to blow 2k id let him get a laptop. you can build a good lanbox (assuming u find a suitable case relatively cheap) for under 800

I understand your point. He said he wanted it to last 5 or more years and I'd guess there might be something out there but I'd never bank on it.

you could go with the h60 but where would you mount it? for that you'll need a case with at least 1 120mm port in the back.

he could just get the Vulcan case which has a giant fucking handle on it'

NZXT Crafted Series Vulcan Black Steel / Plastic G...

Its micro ATX, just slap a 2500K + Z68 Asus w.e the hell it his micro atx board thats Crossfire / SLI ready drop in 4x2gb of DDR3 1600 1.5v ram and call it a day.

I owned one nzxt case it was a great case for the money, could definitely be an option.

that case will work. if you want to go liquid cooling there's also this option as well (along with that case)

gtx 580 with custom water cooling with block for the cpu, yea its only single 120mm on the rad but i think the rad is thicker than most. also comes with 2 fans (i think) for that rad for push pull. the fan they left on the card should also help pull hot air out. kinda expesnive tho

A cpu cooler attached to a water cooled card. Nice... Till the pump dies and you lose your gpu and cpu, lol.
