Hello everyone,

can i use a SAS Harddrive (ST10000NM0206) in my desktop PC?

My "onboard" Z77 Chipset does have some raid but maybe it can run sas protocoll and there are some cables from sas to sata availible but i think its for server chipsets..

sorry am i no server guy so i dont know sas drives..

Maybe there is a cheap and easy way with no monster raid card

[Edit]
Okay i did google before and couldn't belive it.. but it looks like my sata controller needs to SAS as protocoll to run it these passive cables wont work :-/

i think it will work, that's the idea of this adapter in general, but you have to test it for sure....

It's possible to use SATA in SAS but not the other way around in normal server environments.

Only thing you need to make sure of is that not all controller if any supports mixed SATA and SAS drivers on the same controller.

I am not 110% sure it will work sorry to be a dream buster here.

Your board has 2xSATA ports from the Intel Z77 chipset and 2xSATA ports from a Asmedia ASM1042 controller.

Some users on a google search reporting that it do work but some drives turns off after a few hours like in this thread here: https://superuser.com/questions/191681/can-sas-drives-work-on-a-sata-motherboard/191683

But if you want you can get cheap IBM/Lenovo SAS cards off ebay, ali and so on and flash them to normal mode if you don't need raid.

Asus P6T Deluxe uses a Marvell 88se6320 for sas drive Raid

What does this help for OP when he is using a AsRock Z77 Extreme4 motherboard if I may ask?

No your board doesn't have a dad controller, you can get a basic used one off eBay though, the Dell perc h310 cards cheap on ebay
